Ir is said that the Hungarian Cabinet may be seriously compromised in consequence of Zichy, one of the Secretaries of State, being accused of corruption in the conferment ot deorations.

A meetine of the eiectors of Ward 3 will be held this evening, 28th inst., at 8 o'clock, in in the Hall in the rear of the Railway House, Richmond street. for the purpose of choosing a tit and proper person to represent the Ward in the Common Council.

We direct special attention to the large and attractive sale of table appointments, to take place at W. D. Stewarts auction rooms, (Jueen street, on Tuesday next. Mr. Stewart has the largest, most comfortable and commo. cious saleroom in this city. Customers at- tending the sale will find ample accommoda- tion.

Hon. J. C. Pope, Minister of Marine and Fisheries, was in Summerside on Tuesday and Wednesday last. He was accompanied by Mr. Wilmot of the Fishery Department, who paid a visit to Dunk River, with a view of locating a fish breeding establishment. We under- stand that Mr. Wilmot is of opinion that all our rivers can be stocked with salmon at very little cost. — Progress. :

Tue following is a good way to kill a town: Underrate every present and prospective en- terprise ; speak ill of the churches and schools ; tell everybody the hotels are bad ; enlarge the vices of the people, especially the young peo- ple; withhold the patronage from your mer- chants and tradesmen, and buy your goods and groceries at some other place ; never sub- scribe for the daily papers, and, if you are in business, refuse to advertise. —Ez.

A Baty Sow.—Daisy Golding, a child 13 oaths old and weighing 75 pounds, will be exhibited in St. John about the time the Gov- erner General and Princess visit the city. The child, which was of the ordinary size at its birth, has increased in weight from 4 to 5 Ibs. every month since, and still keeps growing. The child is in charge of its mother, and is said to be a great curiosity. —Freeman.

Vanity Fairy says that, not long since, Lord Sydney. Lord Salisbury, Lord Dufferin and Lord Hartington were assembled together, when they were asked by alady which of them had told the greatest number of lies in their life. Lord Sydney atonce replied that he had never told any, upon which Lord Salisbury, remarked reflectively that it was his and Duf- ferin’s trade to tell lies. The lady then said, ‘Count Schouvaloff declares that he never told a lie in his life.” Upon this Lord Har- tingdon observed solemnly, ‘‘Ah! he never grasped the meaning of the word.”

The Floods in Eagiand.

WHEAT AND MAY ROTTING IN THE FIELDS— TOWNS SUBMERGED—FOUR DAYS’ INCES- SANT RAIN. °

Further reports from various parts of England, up to the 22nd inst., show the terrible effects of the storm which is de- vastating the country. At Ipswich the reads are flooiied to the greatest depth ever recollected. At Helesworth there are four feet of water in the streets, and the shops are submerged, the people being conveyed about in carts. At Frawlingham a great flood prevails—in fact, such a one has not been knowa for the last fifty years. The river banks and many acres of grass and corn are submerged. Large quantities of hay have been swept away. All railway traftic between Ipswich and Yarmouth has been stopped by the floods, two bridges having been carried away by the torrent.

Heavy rain has fallen at Berwick-on-Tweed

almost incessantly for four days, and the

consequences are exceedingly disastrous to agriculture, because the hay is unmade and the wheat rotting in the fields. Gales con- tinue to blow at mest of the west coast sta- tions, and the weather is quite severe for the season.

Killed by Lightning.

At Guysborough, N.{S., on Thursday the house of Richard Haden, was struck by lightning and campletely wrecked. Mrs. Haden was killed instantly. Mrs. John Mann, who happened to be present, was a'so struck by lightning and rendered in- sensible, but hopes are entertained of her recovery. Mr. Haden and a number of children who were also present, escaped without serious injury.
