A dream come true... Pat Borders comes to Charlottetown seas de.

Just as a preamble, it must be understood that in spite of the baseball strike I am still a very big baseball fan, specifically of Toronto Blue Jays. So when a friend of mine told me that my favourite player for the last five years, Pat Borders, was coming to Charlottetown, I naturally thought he was joking. He called the radio station to proveit tome. Needless to say I was quite excited. For those who may notunderstand the import of this, imagine that your favourite sports star, singer or actor was coming to Charlottetown. Now do you see what I mean?

I eagerly awaited November 15th, the date of his arrival. I managed to re-arranged my schedule so that I’d be able to go to his afternoon autograph session. Each autograph cost twelve dollars, with some proceeds going to charity. I purchased two : vouchers. The session was supposed to start at noon, but it didn’t begin until almost one; I was left waiting for two hours. This down time was really interesting. I made small talk with people I didn’t get the names of. It seemed like a long time and some of the children were getting restless. I couldn’t help thinking that this was not real, and that I would wake up and find out it was all a dream. But once Borders made his appearance, teality hit. I was so anxious to meet him my knees got weak.

While waiting I decided to pay to get a picture taken with him. When it was my turn, he signed my poster, card and the picture. Then the promoter asked if I wanted my satin Jays jacket signed. I was hesitant, but when he said there would be no charge, I consented. I floated back to residence.

The day was not through yet. I was very eager to tell everyone about the incident. I believe I screamed from the shock of it all. Borders was going to be at a dinner that evening, and of course I had tickets for myself and a friend.

There was a little wait before the dinner started. Once again Borders entertained fans with pictures. My friend wanted one so we both went up again and, believe it or not, Borders remembered me. After the meal, Borders held an informal question and answer period. Since the crowd was relatively small, this aspect of the evening was very personal. A sports memorabilia auction closed out the evening.

Many people don’t understand why I would pay so much to see a man who is not working because the players want more money. Honestly, the strike didn’t even cross my mind. This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me. The cost was almost irrelevant, especially since it appears that Borders may not be with the Blue Jays next season (if there is a next season). I understand that twelve dollars is a bit much for some children to afford, but what are the chances that Pat Borders, 1992 World Series MVP, will ever be in Charlottetown again? And that cost is certainly cheaper than a ticket to Toronto to see Borders play.

I guess it is hard for some people to understand what this has meant to me...basically that day was the greatest day of my existence. That either means I don’t have a great life or that this really was a pretty great moment.

There were approximately four hundred people at the autograph session and possibly one hundred more at thedinner. I was surprised that there weren’t more, but I was there and that’s the most important thing. Borders also visited the Lucy Maud Montgomery school prior to his autograph session.

So to Borders, and all those who brought him here, thank you for making me and others very happy, ! will never forget that day, as long as I live.
