New Friends Host _ Program

When refugees flee from economic duress, political or religious persecution, or natural disasters, many face hardship when they try to make a new home in Canada.

Difficulty with the language, inability to get work in their own field, and a lack of ‘*connection’’ to the community are all major factors in the isolation and loneliness that many new Canadians feel...

The ‘‘New Friends’’ host Program is run by the Cross Cultural Information Commit- tee and funded by Immigration Canada. It is a volunteer program that matches newcomers to Canada with island residents for the purpose of emotional support and friendship.

If you are interested in learning about another culture while sharing yours, please call the ‘‘New Friends’ coordinator at 628-6009. We can make a world of difference!

Racism in all its forms is an ugly thing. Canada heralds itselfas acountry within a multicultural framework. As such, we have a unique opportu- nity to bring together a multitude of peoples from around the globe to share in the develop- ment of this young nation- and to do so peace- fully.

We have.promised ourselves that the barbaric mistakes of World War II would not be repeated again. Yet, our television sets show us the horror of ‘‘ethnic cleansing’’ in 1993. What can we do? Well, to start we can make 4 contribution by becoming aware of the prob- lem, and by being willing to help change racis! attitudes.
