Lonpow, Feb. 12,4.12p. m.—The War Office has received the following despateb from {Field Marshal! Lord Roberts, dated from Modder River, Sunday, Feb. llth:

“J have received a telegram from Gen- eral Buller as follows, dated Friday, Feb. 9th: ‘It was necessary after seizing Vaa! Kranz to entrench it as a pivot of further operations. But I fouad, after trying two days, that, awing to the nature of the grouad, this was impractic able. It was also exposed to the fire of heavy gunosin a position from which our artillery was dominated.

‘It is essential to troops advancing on Ladysmith by Harding or Mungoe’s Drift to bold Vaal Krantz securely; and aecord- ingly we are pot pressing advance by these roads ae [ find we cannot make it
