Tuk last week in June is always devoted to the ceremonies peculiar to the closing of King’s College at the end of the collegiate vear. As the oldest University in the Do- ‘ninion of Canada, and the first one to 'which a Royal Charter was granted, a great interest is always felt in its welfare threugh- out the Maritime Provinces ; and this in- terest manifests itself in the way in which people assemble in Windsor during the Enceenia week. To be sure, Windsor possesses stflicient attraction in itself to draw a large number of visitors in the early summer months, for there are few more lovely spots in Canada. But it is for the sake of the Cellege that the majority

come. ; ; On Monday, the 21st inst., the matricu-

lation examination was held in Windsor, Charlottetewn, and-St. John’s, Nfld. In W indor eighteen candidates presented them- selves. of whom fifteen passed ; the results from Charlettetown and St. John’s have not yet been made known.

On Wednesday the annual meeting of

the Incorporated Alumni was held in the Cenvecation Hall in the morning. The election of Governors took place at this meeting ; Dr. Cowie and Dr. Henry Pryor, of Halifax, were elected Governors in place of Prof. N. Y. Wind, and Rev. H. P. Almen, D. C. L., whose terms expire this year. {n the merning and afternoon of Wed- nesday, a cricket match was played on the College grounds between the Three Elms Club, of the College, and the ofticers of the 10ist, of Halifax. The day, however, turn- ed eut wet and disagreeable, and-a rain- storm coming on, the game had to be stop- ped. The College club, however, was plain ly beaten, and the Cogswell cricket prize— two fine bats, was awarded to Mr. Kirk- patrick, ef the 101st. During the whole day the band of the 101st played on the greunds. Among other pieces on their programme was the celebrated ‘* Old Men's Chorus,” from aust, and a collection of old airs, which were very fine.

On Wednesday evening a cenversazione was held in the Convocation Hall, at which about two hundred guests were present

-|from all parts of the Maritinie Provinces.

The Haydn Quintette Club played during the evening. Although all the pieces were well played, we may mention the overtures to ** Tancredi” (Rossini), and ‘* Le Macon” (Auber), and Hadyn’s Symphony No 12, as particularly good. The guests departed about 10.350.

On Thursday, the day of the Encwnia, aud the last of the collegiate year, there was a choral celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the College Chapel at 7.30 a. m. His Londship the Bishop was the cele- brant, and was assisted by the President and Rev. Prof. Wilson. The service was Alerbecke’s.

At 10 o’cluck, according tothe old cus- tom, the Visitor, Faculty Graduates, Stu- dents and Pupils of the Collegiate School went in procession to the Parish Church of Windsor, where there were Matins and a Sermon. The Rey. Prof. Wilson officiated, and the President preached.

From the parish church all preceeded to to the Convocation Hall, which was well filled. In his preliminary address the President ran over briefly the the iniprove- ments and changes of the past year. He made mention, also, of several who had passed away since last Kncwnia, among whom were Dr. How. J. Y. Hind, Canon Cochrane, and Mr. C. B, Bowman. Many important additions, he said, have been made during the year to the library and inuseum, of which the best is the splendid collection of old china, presented by Mrs. Weldon of Fredericton, valued at nearly $7,000. The President then touched brief- ly on the prosperity of the collegiate school, the advantages of the local examinations, and the need of a gymnasium. He men. tiened, in connection with the last, a sug- gestion that had been made that the stu- dents should level the road through the College woods as a means of exercise. He mentioned, also, the Quinctilian De- bating Seciety and the College Paper, as being of great advantage to the institution.

After his speech, the President read out the names of those who had passed their B. A. degree examinations. There were, with henors in classics; Mr. F. W., Vroome ; with honors in theology. Rev. G. H. Butler: Satisfecet B. A., Mr. L. E. Brecken, and Mr. A. E. Silver ; the pre- liminary honors B, A., Mr. W. B. King, and Mr. K.C. Hind. The list of those who had obtamed scholarships and prizes was then read, and was as follows :

Cogswell Schelarship, Rev. G. H. Butler; Binney Exhibition, Mr. G. R. Martell ; Stevenson Scholarships, Rav. G. H. But- ler, Mr. M. A. Curry; and Mr. H. A. Hensley; General Williams’ prize for Mineralogy. Mr. M. A Curry ; General Williams’ prize for Modern Languages, Mr. W. B. King ; Almon-Welsford Testimonial, Mr. F. W. Frith; President's Prize for English Verse, Mr. J. G. Peters ; Prize Latin Verse, Mr. F. W. Vroom ; McCaw- ley Hebrew Prize, Rev. G. N. Butler ; Divinity Prize for tirat year, Mr. I’. W. W. Frith ; McCawley Scholarship, Mr. F. W. Vroom.

of Kings. Rev. R. E. Smith, B. A., of St. George, N. B., and H., P. Scott, Esq. , B. A., of Halifax, received their M. A. degrees. The following then were made Batchelors in Arte: Messrs. W. 5. H. Morris, I. O. Crisp, F. W. Vroom, if Rutherford and K. J, Jennings.

Mr. Scott then read portions of his M. A Essay, Mr. Peters his prize poem on ‘‘ Montcalm,” and Mr. Vroom his prize Latin peem Mr. Vroom also pronounced the Valedictory-—the formal leave-taking of departing students,

Rev. Chancellor Hill, after this, made some remarks in which he referred te cele- brated men of King’s of the past ; and ad- dressed a few words of good advice to the students.

Dr. Hill was followed by Hon. Senator Almon, who spoke principally on the neees- sity of studying the modern languages. He alse made reference to some of his contem poraries at King’s, among whom were Judge Gray, of British Columbia ; Bishop Suther, of Aberdeen and Orkney; S.r John Inglis, the defender of Lucknow ; and Major Welsford of Sebastopol fame. Dr. Almon also endeavoured to enlist the sym- pathy of the ladies in behalf of the Col- lege.

Hon. W.B, Vail came after Senatur Almon, who congratulated the College warmly upon its prosperity. Mr. Vail dwelt for some time on the historical position of King’s College, and said that all Canadians, of whatever religion, must look with pride upon an institution so ancient, and which has turned out so many fine men.

His Lerdship {the Bishop gave a short address. He said that as it was his pe- culiar privilege to speak last,so was it his pe- peculiar fate to have everything said before- hand which he had intendedtesay. The par- ticular points upon whichHis Lordship dwelt were, the lack of zeal for the College shown by most graduates, the lew state of the College funds, and the injury which would result to the institution if the Gevernment grant should be withdrawn.

After the Bishop’s speech, the convoca- tion was dissolved and ‘‘ God save the Queen” was sung by all standing. Lunch- eon was then served in the Hall, of which about ene hundred guests partook. This euded the proceedings of the day, and of the collegiate year.

Me. DBD. C. McKay, brether of Donald Mc- Kay, Esq., M. P. P., recently passed a very creditable examination at Bethany College, W. Virginia, and toek the degree of Master of Letters. We congratulate Mr. McKay upon his success.
