Fun At Souris

The Souris Fisheries Exhibition and Regatta 1s over, but all who at- | tended the festivities at the fishing port at the east end of the Island agree it was better than ever.

The distinguished guests this time included Canada’s minister of fisher- | ies, Hon. H. J. Robichaud. This visitor from Ottawa fold his audience that | approximatley $4 millions had been realized from Island fisheries in 1963 and that he hoped this year's catch would amount' to $6 millions. He had a word of advice to our commercial fishermen and it is that they should- exploit the herring and the mackerel

’ fishing in the Gulf of St. Lawrence perhaps to a greater extent than they ‘do now.

Mayor Roy Leard had a number of other guests of honor to welcome and entertain, including Hon. Leo Rossiter, the provincial fisheries min- ister, as well as John Mullally, the Kings MP who lives in Souris.

The Storage Problem

It’s probably ybecause the prac- tical application conflicts with long held theories, that storage firms and shippers are reluctant to use a “jac- keted” storage system designed to prolong the storage life of fresh fruit and vegetables.

A new system worked out by the

National Research Council now keeps the food at a constant temperature that’s just above freezing and under maximum humidity. , , It’s the humidity peak that seems to be worrying storage and shipping people, and this is not surprising. These people have subscribed to the long-held theory that high humidity —it runs 98 to 100 percent—in- creases decay and mould in fruits.

NRC researcher Claude P. Lentz insists that his experiments have proven this is not true. His first jarge-scale experiment was with

‘celery and this unorthodox treatment showed that eight tons of celery— that was the amount used—could be held safely for three and one-half months and this was one month longer than it can be held ‘safely un- der normal refrigeration methods. Equally important, the celery was crisper and of better quality. At least the NRC people claim it was.

One commercial organization did try the methed, and they approve. Apples, stored in saturation humidity at- temperatures rarely above freez- ing can be held for longer periods and also retain better eating quali- ties, the firm reported.

The-spuds didn’t lose weight through loss of water, and that would be an important consideration to people who buy and sell goods on*a weight basis. :

From a few growers there are re- ports that are much more optimistic. But one of the more interesting ob- servations comes from a veteran potato producer in Kings: County.

Price-Fixing —

Britain is getting tough with its price- fixers. A group of com- panies making hot water tanks, etc, has just’ been fined a total of $300,000 for contempt of court.

The group-was caught-back in 1959: operating a price- fixing

to an agreement to mend its ways and not to offend again. It had rather a loose conscience, however, and returned to the old practices :
