Minister Monteith disclosed that the provinces so far have re- ported a total of 41 confirmed cases of deformed births result- ing mothers taking the drug thalidomide during preg-

nancy. In addition. Quebec reported es of malformations

among babies but these had not been classified as to whether they resulted from thalidomide.

Mr. Monteith also affirmed the government‘s conviction that. a manufacturer must ac- cept full responsibility for something he puts his name on and sells to the general public. DISCUSS LIEFCORT

Dr. Morrell. questioned about the drug liefcort. developed by‘ a Montreal physician as a treat- 1 meni for arthritis. said he did not fecl it would have been found suitable by his depart- ment bad it been submitted for approval as a new drug for general public distribution.

He said that at present. lief- cort can be used only by its developer. Dr. Robert Lief— mann. and cannot be sold.

Dr. Morrcll told the commit- tee that some more drug con- trol regulations are being. considered and above amendments to the Food and, Drug Act last. fall. One proposal was that manufacturers be re- quired by law to keep recordsE so it can be known whether drugs have been distributed. DIRECTORATE ADDS ONE
