Author Dies In Nova Scotia At 37

LOCKEPORT. N.S. rCP)-Fun- erai services will be held here 10- day for M. A. Sutherland, Cana- dian literary critic and author who died in Toronto following a threee-month illlness. He was 37.

Working from a hospital bed be- fore his death. he completed for publication in review of the works of E. J. Pratt. Newfoundland poet. and an edition of the Northern Review, of which he was editor.

His review of Pratt's works was published three weeks before his death.

Born in Liverpool, N.S.. Mr. Sutherland received his edu- cation there and in Saint John, N.B. He attended Queen's and Mc- Glll Universities and the Univer- sity of Toronto. He was working toward his masters degree when he became paralyzed through can- cer.

Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Audrey Alkman of Toronto.- his parents. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Sutherland. Bridgewater. N. A.: two sisters. Betty (Mrs. Irving Layton) Montreal, and Mary Lou- ise (Mrs. R. E..Jetfrey) Mont- real; two brothers. Donald and Fred. Toronto.

The principle that s new suit named by the responder forces the opener to bid again is unt- forrnly accepted in all circles. If the responder on his second bid names another new suit, the force on the opening bidder continues unabated.
