Chi-Wan beefs up

Students can now get their swell on at the gym without the fear of thieves rummag- ing through their belong- ings.

The Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre has beefed up its se- curity by installing turnstiles, new lockers and swipe card access points throughout the building.

Janice Robertson, program and facility coordinator for the Sports Centre said the measures should prevent the thefts which have run ram- pant for the last few months.

“We had a tremendous problem with theft so we wanted to protect our staff and students. It was up to about two or three thefts per day of mostly things like wallets and cellphones.

“When you see a kid lose a couple hundred dollars, which might have been for tuition, you feel bad when you can’t replace it.”

The turnstiles, which will grant access after a student swipes their ID card, are lo- cated at the front desk of the Sports Centre and at the desk in the Fitness Centre. Stu- dents will also have to swipe their cards to open various entrances throughout the building.

Robertson said thefts be- came a problem because the sports complex was never designed for security, espe- cially since the addition of

the CARI complex in 2004.

“It made it tough for our staff to stay accountable for everyone in the building with so many access points, so the turnstiles are some- thing we’ve wanted for quite some time.”

While the turnstiles are now installed, they will not be operational by March 30 as previously indicated, as there are still some electron- ic issues which need to be resolved.

The lockers in the men’s and women’s change rooms have been replaced with newer, more anesthetically appeal-

ing one just in time for the Canada Games, she said.

“The old ones had been here since the beginning [1990] and many of them didn’t work properly. [They] were getting old are rusty. The new ones are all half lockers so there are more of them.”

Robertson said there was some minor concern from the seniors who use.the track for walking in the morn- ings but said any disruption should be minimal.

“Our staff will be more than happy to assist anyone who needs help getting used to new layout.”
