ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

TAR RISING COST OF EDUCATION

-Itcan cost $10,000 a year to attend university or college.

- From 1989 to 1990 rent increased 5.2%, food 4.2%, and tuition fees 9%.

-In 1991 tuition fee increases ranged from 6% to 25% across the country

- Astudent who borrows $3,000 from the Canada Student Loans Program will have to pay a $90 tax for going into debt.

- Students canexpect to spend $800 on books and supplies - $856 with the GST.

THE GOVERNMENT'S ATTACK

- The present federal government has sold out university and college students.

In the last 5 years, they’ve cut back $3.2 billion from post-secondary education funding.

- Since 1985, they’ve cut back $69.3 million from thesummeremployment program - that’s almost 50%.

- The government has imposed a 3% tax on stu- dent loans.

They’ ve introduced Canada’s first tax on books.

On one hand the government says they'd like a first-class education system, on the other, they claim the money isn’t there.

THE DECREASING STUDENT BUDGE

‘In 1990, students made on average $2,300 under the federal government summer employment program - that means they were $7,700 short of the $10,900 education price tag. - This sun.mer, 150,000 students were without a job - that means they were $10,000 short. - Almost 50% of Canada’s half a million students (outside Quebec) have a Canada Student Loan. Students borrow on average $2,700 a year from the federal loan program - in addition to their provincial loan. | ‘In 1988-89 about 30% of final year students with a federal loan had debt loads of over $5,000, 14% over $10,000, and 6% over $15,000. When com- bined with provincial loans, many more students have debt loads of over $15,000.

THE ALTERNATIVES

The federal government decides how to raise and spend funds.

‘In 1987, 118,162 profitable corporations did not pay income tax.

- + In 1988, the federal government lowered the

corporate tax from 34% to 28%.

‘A 3% minimum corporate tax would raise $1.4 billion.

- If the government repealed the Business Enter- tainment deduction it would raise $1 billion.

- A progressive tax system for personal income would yield billions of dollars.
