Howe's Cracvs.—A Halifax despatch says that Howe's wild west show, which has been “deing” Nova Scotia, has turned out to be one of the worst swindles seen in the lower provirees. A few d sys ago ihe manger, one Baylis, gave a bill of sale of the whole con- cern to one of the employes for salary. The Su-W was at Pictou on Saturday, where the Manager, Baylis, skipped out and the man with the biil of sale took possession. A wild scene followed. Capias followed capias in quick succession, The wageless eriployes struck and a warrant was issued for the arrest of the man holding the bill of sale on a charge of gambling at Stellarton. The prisoner de- posited $20 for his appearance at trial on Mon- day, and afew hours later he too skipped. At daylight on Sunday morning the circus effects were shipped on a special train en route for Puint Levies, and the penniless per- formers were left in Pictou to bewail their fate.

News From Quebec. (QUEBEC, Sept. 11.
The scores of the St. John batteries at the 40-pounder in the competition for the Montreal challenge cup and money prizes are given below.
lt will be remembered that last year this cup was won by No. 4 Battery, St. John, and up to the present is held by them. The conditions this year in this match are alto- gether different from last, seven men con- stituting the firing team then against four now.
The scores are: No.1 Battery, 91; No. 3 Battery, 45; No. 4 Battery, 92. Levis
Battery, which tired with the St. John men, made 87. This afternoon the New Brunswickers
did their shift with great steadiness. No misadventure occurred, and the gun came up beautifully on the carriage. Time, 9.45.

The details of this shift proved to be that the gun was to be taken back to its original position over an obstruction cousistiuy of a long skid placed at right angles about 20 feet from the car- rige. A defective skid broke causing some delay, but the shift ended in 9m. 303.,with no slouch work.
Gubernatorial Wovements.
Toronto, Sept. 11. The Governor-General and Lady Stanley this morning visited the Toronto University, Osgoode Hall and the Education Depart ment, and in the afternoon they drove to the exhibition grounds, when His Excel- lency was presented with an address and formally opened the Exhibition. After- wards they visited the Public Library and Ald. Haliam’s residence, where the address was presented from the Lancashire lads and lasses. In the evening His Excellency dined at Government House. Their Ex-
cellencies will leave to-morrow morning.

Decrease in Tea Shipment. Toronto, Sept. 11.
A special cablegram to the Mail says that in the report of the British Consul at Yokohama, a decrease of 6000 tons is re- corded in the shipment of tea by the Suez Canal. The greater portion of this quantity has been carried by steamers running in connection with the Canadian Racific Rail- way.

A premature explosion of a blast in the south face of the works in the Montana Central Railway south of Helena this morn- ing, killed ten men and seriously injured five.

Potatoes in England,
Writing of the crops in England this year, the Agricultural Gazette says :-—** In estimating the yield something like the attitude of mind assumed by the man who declared that his pig did not weigh as much as he expected, and that he never thought that it would, may be recommended. The price of potatves in one of the large pro- ducing districts, 60 miles from London, is now 15s.atoun! Was such a price ever before known so early in the season / From the same district the freight by Great Eastern Railway to London is 17s. 6d, per ton, in single ton lots that is to say, the company requires more for carrying a ton of potatoes 60 miles than the grower can getfor them. There is a great crop this year, but unsoundness is so common that it will disappear with unusual rapidity. Apparently the proportion of potatoes is being overdone. People have been pity- ing the fruit growers because it was sup- posed their crops were spoiled for market purposes by the wet weather. In reality, however, as far as most of the fruit gather- ed upto the present time is concerned, itis rather the consumers than the pro- ducers who have needed pity.”
If this be true, we may be able this year to sell potatoes inthe mother country at a profit.
