Interesting Rerorrt.—The financial statement of the town of Summerside, for 1897, has just been iseued by Mayor Hunt, A copy has not yet come to hand, but according to the Guardian’s correspondent, it Shows a gross revenue from all sources of $12,251.75 of which $1,177.33 sre crecited tothe Ganada Temperance Act for ‘ices collected during the year. The exrensea of the C T A collection amounted to $166,55 leaving a net balance of $1,010.- 78 from this source alone. LETTER FROM COUNCILLOR HUGHES.

To the Editor of The Guardian :

Sir,—In reply to yours of yesterday “Concerning Stone” I have to say:—

1. Jt has not been the custom to call for tenders for stone for macadenzing, nor do I think it conld be purchased in that way. as a large portion of itis obtained from vessels as they enter here in spring wnd fall in ballast, and is purchased at a much lower pricethan it could poseibly be uxder any other circumstances.

2. The quantity increased owing toa lar- ger quantity offering this fail than last, and j was purchased at a much reduced price. ; In send'ng yessels direct for this stove the ) price cannot well be regulated, and as the season when the stone can be procured is short, the price paid greatly depends on freights. The stone purchased is paid for by weight on the certificate of the weigher, countersigned by the City Surveyor and also by the Chairman ofthe Street Com- mittee, and approved of by the Finanee Committee.

3. The quantity of stone purchased for crossings is too small to call for tenders, but is purchased frem the quarries at their regular price for such atock,
