Loypox, Dec. 14.—Julian Ralpb de- scribing the battle of Margersfontein, in a Special despatch to the Daily Mail, says . “The Boers were entrenched at Margers- foutein, four miles north of Modder River. Atdawnon Monday the Highlanders ad- vancing across the veldt were suddenly subjected to @ murderous fire from the trenches, about 200 yards in front.
“The greater part of the fearful loss of the day was thus suffered. In a single minute, startled and overwhelmned, the brigade retired quick, but soon rallied and retained their position., This was on the |) left.
On the right the guards brigade ad vanced across the veldt against other trenches and fought an invisible foe for fifteen hours. Acil in the morning the Gordon Highlanders were sent forward. The Boers allowed them to pass one line of trenches, and then enfiladed them. We raked the Boer trenches with ariillery throughout the day. The fighting only ceased with night fall.

ground which will lead t» the basement. All of the exterior and interior of the church has been newly painted. The in- terior by Mr. Chas. Matheson, who has this time done work of the first quality, and the exterior by Mr. A. Howat'. The basement has been painted by Mr. Dan Howlett.
The system of lighting has undergone a vast improvement. Three chandeliers have been suspended, the main one of which is said to be the handsomest in the pro- vince.
Great credit is due to the chairman and Board of Trustees for the'r energy and as- eistance during the time of repair. Every- thing connected with the renovation of the church has been done in the most capable manner, and is most creditable to all con- cerned.
