He Wants aN Annuiry.—An old resi- dent of Mill Vale, Lot 21, who has (ac- cording to his own teaching) ‘‘ spent the greater portion of his valuable existence in the study and performance of work which would tend to promote the welfare of his feliow beings,” sends a memorial to the Local Government asking an annuity. He sets forth his claims as follows: Whereas, for years I have labored for the advance- ment of seieice and the geod of my coun- try, I am emboldened to approach your honors in Council, and will trouble you by detailing to you the facts that i have been the promoter and founder of three of the greatest blessings that ever happened to Prince Edward Island :

Firstly anid foremostly, 1 may mention how the Island has been blessed by the knowledge which 1 imparted to the son’s of the late Honorable Alexander Laird, of New Glasgow. That knowledge was the means of spreading mud-diggers all over this Is- land—thus enabling the Island to increase in wealth by the richness of this fertilizing ingredient which has been taken out of the rivers by the knowledge imparted by me. While the Island has prospered through my agency, I have never been rewarded by as much as a single load of mud.

Secondly, | have been the propounder aud founder of the Education Act of this Province. That is to say, the Davies- Stewart combination in framing the Act stole my cultivated brains.

Thirdly, I gave the inforzsution that led to the construction of the A .erican Moni- tors, and which, I have no éopbt, if your honors would be pleased to r2present the matter to the American Government, would reward me handsomely. ~

Fourthly and lastly, I have for years been laboring to endeavor-to Ciscover the science of perpetual metion.

For these services and kindred labours of love by me performed, I entreat your honors to grant-me the necessary funds to enable me to carry my projects into execu- tion, were it only the small sum “f one hun- dred dollars per annum [ shall feol gratified and thankful to you, and will accept it asa token of your appreciation of my services aud the good that [ have done for my coun- try, and as in duty bound your memorial- ist will ever pray. Cabul, Dec. 24th, is as follows :—‘‘Our success yesterday was complete. The enemies loss was severe. Our loas was five

killed, including Capt. Dunbar, and Lieut. Nugent, of the Engineers, by a premature explosion when blowing up the towers of the neighboring village, and 33 wounded, the majarity of whom are doing well. Those of the enemy living in Cabul went straight to their homes after the defeat. Kohistan- isand Logaris remained in Cabula few hours ; but fied during the night.”

Two of the enemy’s leaders—Mushki Alim and Mahomed Jan—fled early in the day. Another prominent leader is reported to have fled with Yakook Khan’s eldest son toward Wardak. The cavalry have gone in puranit,

Bala-Hissar and the city will be taken possession of this afterneon. The forum will be occupied if it appears certain that there is no danger from hidden mines.

Yakoob-Khan’s wife and the mether and daughter of the late Akbar Khan, who are reported to contemplate flight, and who have done allin their pewer to incite the Afghans, will be brought to Shirpur te- day.

I have telegraphed Gen. Bright to push forward the detachments from Jugdulluk to Chobaba and Lataband. I send a force to occupy Bulkak te-morrow. Communica- tion with India will thus be rapidly re- stored.

“4 when every one is engaged in trying to please, when stores are ransacked for their prettiest treasures and their cheapest stock, in order to make Christ- mas as joyous as in Olden Times, we are.offering our quota to this end. Our Christmas Cards are of the most varied character, and indicate, by the way in which they go off, that the 25th will soon be here.

We take this opportunity to place other goods of a more use- ful and not less pleasing nature, before our friends. Our reduc- tions in Mantle Cloths, Dress Materials, Fur Goods, &c., must be very opportune when “ every- body is presenting everybody else ” with something—a sacque, a dress, or a muff. We have on hand a large and very attractive stock which will, we have no doubt, meet the requirements and the approbation of the Christmas loving public.

The good cheer which Christ- mas is said to bring is not to be found in the dregs of the wassail bowl, or in a pint of brandy punch, but in the good warm clothing which a benevo- lent public are bestowing on the poor. ~ It is in trying to please others we enjoy the greatest pleasure, and any one engaged in the work of “giving to the poor” or to their own people, cannot do better than give a call at 83, where, in so large astock, every one must find the very article they require, and that at a very low price. |

Gentlemen will find it the best economy to come to us for Overcoats and Ulsters, of which we have a few left. In our at- tempt to place a good Overcoat at a small price, we have suc- ceeded--every article sold having viven complete satisfaction. We have just got in new Linders and Drawers at prices to suit the times.
