Men's soccer come back with split; women's field hockey lose in finals

To start off this edition of Sports Briefs, we'll talk about the men’s soccer team. Last weekend the Panthers came back from their two away games with one win and one loss. The boys managed to overcome a strong Dalhousie team and win 2-1. The soccer Panthers also played Acadia that weekend and lost 2-0. I'm told that one of the reasons for this loss is that as many as five starters sat out that game. Glenn Miller still holds a fourth place rank in the AUAA scoring race, with five goals.

The field hockey Panthers lost in theAUAA final this weekend to the host UNB side. UPEI beat SMU 3-2 in the semi-finals, but they came up three goals short aginst UNB in a 5- 2 loss. Ona brighter note Holly Boswall, Anne Mayme, Cheryl McQuillan, and Tracy McGee were voted AUAA all-stars. Anne Mayme received secound team All Canadian status. Tracy McGee gained first team All Canadian status and was nominated for the Gail Wilson award, which is given to players who have both outstanding athletic and academic achievements.

The hockey Panthers lost on the road last week to UdeM with a score of 6-2. The boys managed to pull out a 7-2 home win last Wednesday against MTA. The boy’s are on the road this weekend at STU. ;

The UPEI men’s rugby team played in the NB/PEI university playoffs last weekend in MTA. The B-side played STU in their first game and lost a close one, 10-8. Scoring for the Panthers were Beezer MacDonald with one try and Darcy Campbell with a penalty conversion.. The A-side beat UNB in their first game 33-17. Scoring for the Panthers were Billy McQueen (2 tries), Caleb Hurry (1 try), John DeMonton (1 try), Dayre MacNally (1 try), Mark Gaudet with a drop goal; and Mike Gallant with one penalty kick and a conversion. UNB was previously undefeated in the NB\PEI division so this win for the Panthers was huge. In the final against STU the Panthers could not hold on to the lead at the end of the game. The Panthers led for the first halfand up until a penalty call was made and UPEI had to play short handed. STU took advantage of this situation and scored a try and coverted it in the dying minutes of the game. STU won 29-27, scoring for the panthers were: Billy McQueen (1try), Dayre (2 tries), Dave Smith (1 try), and Mike Gallant completed one penalty kick and two conversions.
