OTTAWA, Nov. 11-'I'he Stu Lawrence deep waterways schemc and a reciprocal trade treaty be- tween Canlda and the United states loomed large on the Can- adian political horizon during the pest week but rumors concerning these two important projects cir- culated without definite, official comment from either Prime Min- ister R, B. Bennett or Hon. W. D. Her-ridge, Canadian minister to Washington.

The recent visit to Ottawa of Undersecretary of State William D. Phillips, the strengthening of the hand of President Franklin l). Roosevelt in last Tuesday's United States elections, and Mr. Roose- velt's statements at a conference later in the week. all contributed to the growing belief that both the scowhys treaty and a. trade pact had again become live issues.

From the beet information avail- able Mr. Phillips’ visit to the Can- adian Prime Minister and his ns- sociates concerned a more or less minor issue of little general inter- est. but while here he laid before Mr. Bennett several points in the seaways treaty which might be adjusted with a view to a more successful issue when the docu- ment is again aubmittetwfo the‘ United States Congress.

On no previous occasion was the Remembrance Day service more fittinlly oelebratod at the War ildlonument than it was yesterday morning. There was a large turn- out of veterans and many hund- reds oi citizens lined the streets and assembled at the monument to participate in the ceremony.

Parading with the returned men, who wore their decorations and

their divisional colors ‘during the War, were the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Royal Canad- ian Naval Volunteer Reserve Com- pany, and the Prince Edward Is- land Highlanders. Headed by the Legion Band and msrshalled by Legion Vice President H. R. Large. the men paraded from the Legion Home to Queen Street, thence by way of Kent, Prince and Grafton Streets to the monument. From 10.45 a.m. until the eleventh hour the Fire Bell tolled at intervals of twenty seconds. The ceremony was brief, but perhaps more impressive. for this reason. After the singing of "O Canada." led by the Charlottetown Male Chorus and accompanied by the Band, wreaths were placed at the foot of the monument by His Honour Lieutenant Governor De- Blois, Premier the Hon. W. J. P. Macmillan, His Worship Mayor Kennedy, Brigadier H. l". Hertzberg, C.M.C.. D.S.O., MC, and by representatives of military units, fraternal and other so- Uieties, and private citizens. At 11 am. sharp a gun sounded, and for two minutes all heads were bowed in silent prayer. Rev. (Capt) R. Moorhead Le- gato, D.D., Chaplain of the Legion, then recited the touching lines of Laurence Binyon's war poem: "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Then followed the sounding of the Last Post by Bugler Ben]. Doiron, of the R.C-N.V.R.C., and the singing of that magnificent hymn so often heard at services behind the Lines and in training camps during the War: "O God Our Help in Ages Past."

As the last verse of the hymn was concluded, the clear bugle notes of the "Reveille" were heard, and the service was brought to o close with "God Save The King."

Canada's capital today paid homage to the memor of its dead of the Great War. Nea.ly 2,000 vet- erans paraded to the Cenotaph on Parliament Hill, reinforced by an equal number of men from the Ot- tawa garrison.
