It a ' skin were to be placed beside alcohol for all to see and read. it is ukely that no one would be so foolish as to drink it. But the uquor people have placed their Wu Placards in front of the warning signs and tell the public that this beverage is good. They put the poison in fancy bottle and instead of labelling the bottles. "poison-do not use internally" they make a label which describes the contents as being some very rare elixir. They are able to do this been se they have minions to spen in advertising.

He Was Drinking At The Time

How often have you heard it said. when someone has commit- ted a crime. "He was drinking at the time." It is a matter of com- mon knowledge that alcohol goes with and is the cause of much crime. Here are some facts: "The Ontario Government's Re- port for 1948 on Reform In- stitutions states that. of the total number of those sentenced in that Year 60 per cent were intemperatc and 80 per'cent temperate users of alcohol".

How needless are -so many- of the tragedies we ,read about in the newspapers as well as thosl! we all know about first hand. This clipping taken from a daily news- paper should make one think:

Nov. 3o-(AP)- A grand Jury yesterday indicted , 20-year-old Euclid, 0.. freshman. for first-degree murder in the slaying of an Ohio state University senior. .. is charged in the fata 21-year-old , of Norwood. O. managing editor of the University paper. The shoot- lng climaxed a fraternity cock- tail party the night before Ohio State University's home-coming football game, Nov. 12.

But what else can be expected when the facts of medical science tell us plainly that even small amounts of alcohol destroy a per- son's judgment and, for the time being. blot out the uu clenee.

A young man found himself in difficulty with the law time and again because of aioohcnl, I-Ie lov- ed to drive an automobile or a truck. one evening. while on a visit to one of our Canadian cit- ies. after a few "beers", he took a truck and drove it around the blcck. As he was parking the truck he was arrested by the po- lice. Convicted on two counts- driving while intoxicated and stealing a. truck-he was sentenced to one year in a reform institu- tlon. Again. while In company with some companions, after, a row drinks, he broke into a store. Although nothing was taken from the store. he was again brought before the courts. This incident just about ruined him as far as finding work in his home city was concerned.

You Can't Oil Machinery with Alcohol

we are learning more all the time about the effect of alcohol upon the human body and brain We know that even a small quan- tity of alcohol slows a person down so that he cannot act as quickly as he should. In this ma- chine age. when we are either driving high-powered automobiles or dodging them. when millions work in factories or mines, ano handle powerful machines, this slowness means tragic accidents. There are We ways in which alcohol slows us down. one is. it slows down our ability to decide quickly what to do. Anyone who drives a car knows that time and again you have to make up your mind in a split second whether to put on the brakes. speed up. or swerve to one side. It has been proven. by scientific tests. that as small an amount of alcohol as 1 1-2 ounces for a. man of i50 pounds weight. slows down his pcwer to decide by 9.7 per cent. The other way in which alcohol slows us down is in reducing the speed with which we act. After we have made up our minds what to do, it takes a longer time to get started; that is. the muscles are slower in obeying the orders of the brain. It has been found by experiment that there is a loss of 7.4 per cent in the time it takes to put our decisions into action. Recent tests reported in the Dauy Press early in 1960 show that the effect is much greater than formerly thought: up to in per cent loss in efficiency.

Yes. the other felow is there too. In this machine age. we must take into account the danger to others which results from the drinking of alcohol. This is true for the worker in the factory and for the one who drive: an auto- mobile. Indeed, it holds true for the one who does not drive a car but who walks the street. A Nova Scotla judge recently made the statement that there are more accidents caused by drinking pedestrians than by drinking drivers. .

If Christianity means anything it means that we must try to think of one another and govern our- selves accordingly. Here is a place for practical Christianity.

The trouble is that a person who is drinking. even when he may have intended beforehand not to drive a. car. when under the influence of liquor, may forget all about his resolve and drive just the same. Again, a good argument against drinking at all.

The Christian a Good Citizens

The very least that the would ex- pects of a. Christian is that he be a good citizen of his country. He is called upon to be careful about obeying the law and watch out for the public safety. surely of all people. a Christian should never use a. drug which will cause him .to commit a crime or bring a lneedless accident to himself or icthers.
