BRANDON, Man. (CP) — Ken Smith, a coal miner who moved to Brandon after the mine disas- ter at Springhill last October, is taking his family back home to the Nova Scotia town. ;

The 34-year-old miner brought his wife and 13-year-old son here

seven months ago. They became Brandon's adopted family after an underground upheaval in the Cumberiand Railway and Coal Company's No. 2 colliery at Springhill claimed 75 lives Oct. 3. ‘

Now they have decided to go back. They leave June 30.

Springhill Miner Is Coming Back

Mr. Smith said Saturday their reason is simple: “Springhill is home.” Once they get back, he said, they never want to move again.

Mr. Smith has not lined up a job in the Nova Scotia commu- nity, where the employment and general economic picture has been bright since the Scene Steel and Coal Company, the Cumberland company’s parent firm, closed the mine folowing the disaster.

“T suppose it’s a gamble,” he said. ‘Many things are a gam- ble.”

He would never return te min- ing, the work he had done for. 15 years. ‘I've had enough of that,” he said.

His wife, Renovia, said the de- cision to leave was unanimous.

“There was no coaxing on either side. We both want te go home.”

She said her son, David, is homesick and wants te see his school chums again.

Brandon went. all out to try to make the Smiths feel at home after they accepted Mayor Jim Creighton’s invitation to move west. The city found a new apart- ment home for the family, filled it with furniture, and lined up a job for Mr. Smith at the Manitoba Power Commissior’s steam plant here.
