The Burden of the Public Debt.

THe Moucton Times supplies the following figures as representing the burden of the public debt in the years mentioned :

Decrease in debt burden since 1881, | three hundred and fifty-seven thousand | dollars! The Times also remarks that the estimates for next year show a de- crease of upwards of two hundred thous- aud dollars in interest and sinking funds, notwithstanding the silly assertions that the country is going to wreck and ruin by reason of the enormous debt, and that the charges of management of the debt for the present year and next year (estimates) average less than $179,100, while the average for this service during the Mackenzie Government's term of office was upwards of $200,000. Under the Mackenzie Government the net interest increased over a million dollars, and the interest last year was actually less than the first year Sir John’s Government came into power.

Congregational Singing.

LAST EVENING, a very large congrega- tion gathered in the Methodist brick Church, to hear the Rev. Mr. Lathern, who occupied the pulpit for the first time since he resigued the pastorate of the Church, five years ago. The text— “ Grounded in Love”—was taken from the 17th verse of the 3rd chapter of the Epistle to the Ephesians; and the ser- men was an able and eloquent discourse, But we missed the congregational singing that used to be such an important part of the worship, and it seemed that Mr. Lathern missed it, too. Before giving

‘Against the western shore the surf beats in, inceseantly chanting its never-ending dirge over those whom its pitiless waters have en- gulfed. But very calm and beautiful was the sea of St. Lawrence that summer day, and its waves murmured softly and cooiugly as they twined strange wreatha of wild sea-grasses round our horses’ feet, and brought us delicate mosses and dainty shells, as if to allure us to venture nearer to their treacherous depths; but ever and anon the gentle waves broke against the wooden wall of ecme ill-fated wreck that, lodged in the tenacious sand-bar, stood a grim testimony to toe truth of Mr. Stedman's beautiful poem:

*“ Woe, woe to those whom the Islanda pen ! In vain they shun the doub'e capes ; Cruel are the reefs of Magdalen ;

The Wolf's white fang what prey escapes? The Grindstone grinds the bones of some,

And Coffin Isle is craped with foam ;

On Deadman’s shore are fearful shapes !”’

In the Magdalene Islands, says Miss Pope.— “b ;

‘One finds a distinct peasantry—a hardy, self-reliant race, that keepto their own cus- toms of dressand speech as handed down from their Basque and Breton avestry. No faded flounces and tawdry flowers or mere- tricious jewelry incommode these women in their daily toil. Short, full homespun gowns, generally of some dar’, rich color, surmount- ed by a loose, light, print jacket; their glos+y black heads covered by large sunbonnets of snowy whiteness, furnished with a deep cape;

| their shapely feet and well-turned ankles en-

cased in gaily stripped steckings and strony leather shoes—such is their week-day a'tire. They are very tenacious about these shoes and stockings, and would be terribly scandalized at being caught going barefooted, as is the custom of the peasantry of the British Isles W hat they were in the days of Bishop Plessis they are now: when you see one you see «l! There are, of course, different degrees of comeliness, but all are neat, clean and well- dressed, and pass you with a cheery ‘Bon jour !” that is pleasant to bear.”

Weare pleased to notice that Miss Pope has not forgotten to refer to the services reodered them by their indefatigable repre- sentative in the Parliament of Canada, Dr. Fortin; and having given a few glimpses of what Miss Pode pourtrays ‘‘In and around the Magdalen Islands. We have no deubt the readers of Tue Exam- INER will procure for themselves, and read, admire and profit by Miss Pope's brochure.

A New Campaign of Terror.

The Russian Nihilists have renewed their activity and begun a new campaign of ter- rorism in the Province of Moscow. They have placarded the Province and its capital with hundreds of copies of a manifesto carrying a threat of death to the Czar. As these placards were all posted on the same night, and as each man engaged in the work could have posted but very few of them, owing to the necessity of dodging the police, it is evident that the Nihilia‘s must count among theiz members a large number of men willing to risk their liberty in the prosecution of such an enterprise. The proclamations are we!l printed on good paper and are headed ‘*The executive com- mittee to the Emperor Alexander III. ’

out the hymn, he said, “We will join in the service of sacred song;” but as the tunes chosen by the leader of the choir were entirely new to the congregation, they were unable to take any part in that service. This is certainly a mistake. While it is pleasing to see a good choir in every Church, it is still more pleasing to hear the whole congregation sing with the spirit and the understanding. We hope, when Mr. Lathern preaches in the brick Church again, be will hear con- gregational singing, such as he used to have when he was their Paster.

None of the peculiar type used in printing the placards has been discovered, aud the police believe that it wes melted up immediately after being used.

Mere Dynamite Cutrages.

They have resulted in the injury of but a few persons, all belonging to the poorer classes. Seventy-four Lives in Peril.

THE CREW OF A SRALER FLOATING TO SEA ON ICE,

The Newfoundland brig Confederate, Captain Thomas Green, of Harbor Grace, with a crew of seventy-nine wen was canght in a formidable ice nip in Notre Dame Bay on the 8th April and thrown completely on the floe. The ship lies over on ber side with her yard arms on the ice. On the 20th of May, five of the crew volun'eered to travel to land, a distance of nearly twenty miles, and report on the situation, at imminent peril of hfe, and in an ex hausted condition they reached Twillingate, boarded the steamer Hercules and arrived in St. John’s on the 30h ult. They report all provisions consun ed, except bread, and the last pound of fuel exhausted. There is a frozen oc an of ice all round, and as the ship thus beset is now drifting out to sea there is danger of the whole crew being lest or starved to death.
