The Yott Case.
Kinaston, May 22 —-The big ferry steamer Pierrepont has carried mavy a visitor to Wolfe Island recently to interview Mr. L. Yott, a farmer of that Island whose wonderful cure by Dodd’s kidney pills was recently published in these columns.
The publication of se many marvellous cures had already excited much interest in this community, and now that we have proof of whathas been said of this remedy at our very doors it is taked of on all sides. Mr, Yott's case was one that had excited the pity and anxiety of everyone for many years, and now that he is well and strong the people are not only much gratified with the result, but interested in the incontestable proof that Dodd's kidney pills certainly strike right at the seat of the diseases for which they are recommended, and are certain in their re- sults.

ern roadside has invaded the c.lmer North, snd lynehings on the hither side of the Ohio River have become alarmingly fre- jaent. The States of Indiana, Kansas, lowa, Minnesota and even Michigan bear the stain of untried blood upon their soil; sand—more disquieting than all to Cana- dians—the contagion erossed the border in the rough West a few weeks ago. The reason for this overriding of law is to be read plainly on the face of things. In desling with a murderer, there is ro nat- ural antagonism between the law and the instincts of the people. Both would pun- ish, Hence in a land where the law can be depended upon to do its duty, the people appeal to it with confidence to redress their wrongs—te vindicate justice. Public spirit and the courts work hand in hand and there is no thought in the breast of any of superseding the established machinery of deliberate and certain justice—the judge, the jury, the open trial, the sheriff and the rope.
The public only feel the necessity of do- ing the work the courts are provided to accomplish, when they distrust this machin- ery of their own making. So staunch a Northern Republiean journal as the Phil- adelphia Press sees clearly where the trouble lies. It saya :
‘There must be some cause for the mani-
manifestation of this lawless spirit. One reason undoubtedly is the ease with which murderers escape the penalty for their crime. When men see a murderer like Carlyle Harris almost saved from punish- ment by the free use of money and his death delayed until nearly the whole moral effect is dissipated, they argue that the law has become powerless and courts corrupt and criminals safe, provided they have money and influential friends. In a com- munity pervaded by sucha sentiment it needs only a murder of especial atrecity to arouse all the worst passions of a mob which neither the officers of the law nor the orderly element can control. A lynch- ing naturally follows such a situation.” The spread of this social disease to the North alarms the press for the safety of the Republic. ‘* People have been accus- tomed to look upon lynching as indigenous to the South and far West,” it says. “The condition of society prevailing in those neighborhoods has been re- garded as especially favorable to such out- breaks, aud the belief has been general that with the advance of refinement and civili- zation these lawless acts would end. But the experince of the past few months con- tradicts the theory, and favors the impres- sion that the whole country is returning to the barbarous method of ixflicting punish- ment.” The vital need for stemming this disastrous current is fully appreciated by this ultra-Republican journal in the “‘ city of brotherly love” and it closes it article with this appeal :
“‘ Public sentiment must be warned and aroused on this subject, and the direction in which things are drifting must be made plain. There must be a more rigid en- forcement of the law and judges and courts must be made to see their duty. Punish- ment must follew conviction more quickly and the leniency shown to criminals must give way to the safety ofthe community. A demoralization that will be fatal is certainly sweeping over the country and every ad- vecate of law and order must be awekened to the danger. The North has so long pointed the finger of scorn at the South that it has forgetten it was nurturing a viper in itsown bosom It will have to look carefully to its own condition, how- ever, if it is not to merit the condemnation justly visited upon the Southern people.”
The Americans, however, have a curative remedy right at hand. They have only to look back to the land from whose loins
system founded upon the deliberate judg- ment of responsible Ministry, and not upon the intrigue of the party ‘“‘primary” and the study of local ‘‘votes,” is a suflicient safe guard against lynch law.
