National Student _ Day was created by an unanimous vote of delegates attending the 4th annual conference of the National Union of Students held in Winnipeg May 16, 1976.

It came as a response to the growing lack of awareness of student issues in Canada both by students and society at large.

Four kinds ofNSD material have been proposed for national co-ordination. These include

The on-campus campaign which has already begun includes introductory material making students aware that National

The program will conclude with the presentation of the declaration of concerns to the eleven governments on Novem- ber 9th.

Because of the stress of the campus initiative nature of NDS, the BC students have rejected a province wide demonstration on the BC legislature.

Because BC is a province with severe unemployment tuition increases coming, and highly visible cutbacks in the education sector, these are the issues of

The members of the Federa- tion of Alberta Students have plans to publish a province-wide distributed newspaper with which to help publicize the issues and events for National Student Day. ‘

The Alberta students have ndicated a definite reluctance to initiate boycotts but they have had luck in the past' in getting large turnouts of students to general meetings.

But what. happens on National Student Day? Why is‘ November 9th going to be a day unlike any other? ‘

Most activities ﬂand programs will be organized en a local level

and as such will vary from campus to campus» but the . national co—ordinating committee has been established to keep those local activities from hap- pening in isolation. It makes sure, that the learning and action carried out for National Student Day is mutually supportive and contributes to the national effect. The co—ordinating committee will also keep the national campaign in order. It has already issued introductory leaflets and a poster announcing the. coming

day. -

' Committees have already been formed at two of the Manitoba campuses. Major concerns of Day organizers here include the serious lack of classroom space in community colleges. tuition in- creases. and cutbacks in educa- tional spending.

Most campuses in Ontario have chosen organizers and have set up a provincial coordinating committee. As a major priority of the Ontario Federation of Students the co-ordinating com- mittee will be holding workshops on organizing campus activities.

Many campuses in the Atlantic have started to plan for their participation. Those campuses have relatively close links with their surrounding community which will be a great benefit to the effort. ,

National Student Day, is the official day of concern for all Canadian post-secondary stu- dents. ‘
