Therefore. men who are occupied in making auto- mobiles or aircraft, or smaller articles such as our clothes and shoes. are truly working as their labors are going into the produc- tion of some material object. The same is true of a musician or post, although their work and their final achievements are loflier in the scale of perfection. Even when we wash the dishes or sweep the floor there is true work, as a material improvement is brought about.

However. I wish to extend the meaning of the term "work" to include every useful human activ- ity. An action such as thinking, in which there is nothing pro- duced externally. ls therefore, :1 type of work. I can than define

In this sense. work sounds very easy and uncomplicated. It simply the unfolding of the pow- ers or abilities which we possess as human beings. This means that work is not bad. because it is natural for man. it is unnatural not to work. If a person of gen- ius, auch as an outstanding poet or artist, were to refuse to put his talent to use, we would say that he was wasting his life. He is not being a complete human being as his genius lies languish- ing nnd inert.

The majority of people, how- ever, do not possess such excep- tional ability. They are like you and me. They are quite ordinary.
