The R. C. Church at Buckingham, Que., was struck by lightning on the 16th inst., and slightly damaged.

It is expected the Montreal city Council will resist the payment of the volunteers for their services on the 12th.

The heated term in the States still con- tinues, though the fatal cases of sunstroke are not so numerous.

Lord Beaconsfield and Lord Salisbury will be banqueted by the Common Council of London, and presented with the freedom

of the city.

It is stated that Lord Beaconsfield has determined upon going to the country, although some of the members of the Cabinet are opposed to such action.

Indian affairs in the North-Western States are said to be assuming a sTious aspect, and troops are being hurried for ward from the garrison on the seaboard.

The Austrian occupation of Bosnia appears to be obnoxious to the people of that province, and that bands of them are preparing to resist the occupation.

The strike at Auzin is one of the most extensive ever known in Franc... Five thousand colliers left the pits demanding higher wages, and that eight hours be a day’s work. There are the usual rumors / afloat of foreign instigators and Bona~ partists intrigues. The gen d’armerie has had to protect the pits to prevent the agi- tators from seizing them and stopping those still at work. A number cf arrests have been made, Troops have been brought up, and the pbblic houses closed.

It is something new that one member of the House of Lords should state that what another said of an important matter | to which he was a party was untrue, and that when he.was called to order and sub- stituted the word incorrect for untrue he should proceed to compare the statements made Ly the noble Lord to whom he was replying to those made by the infamous Titus Oates.
