U. S. Seeks Interest In Belgian Congo Uranium Mines

LONDON. April 27 -- (OF) -A financial source said the week the Bank of England is negotiating a stock deal giving the United states an interest in the Belgian Congo uranium mines.

Spokesmen for the Bank, the Treasury, and both British and American Interests involved refus- ed to confirm or deny the deal. but they admitted that a question on the matter will go before the House of Commons in a few days.

The deal. if carried through. would also give American interests is big share in control of the vital Benguela Railway which moves the precious are from Africa's heart on the first leg of its journ- ey to American A-bomb plants.

If the reported deal matures. the bank would sell about 1.000.000 shares of stock in "Tanganyika concessions" to a financial group with strong American participa- tlon.

The group is said to be headed by the Anglo-American Corpora- tion. a widely-known mining fin- ance house controlled by the fab- ulously-wealthy British-outh Af- rican financier, sir Ernest Oppen- heimer. '

William Lincoln Honnold of San Francisco. wealthy mining engin- eer, is a permanent director of the Anglo-American Corporation and some London financial circles put American participation in the firm as high as 50 per cent.

Tanganyika concessions own 00 per rent of the capital of the Benguela Railway and 14 per cent of tho stock in Union Miniere riu 1-laut Katanga - the firm that works the vital uranium and cap- I per mines in the Belgian Congo-

Egg production on Prince Ed- ward lsland is increasing rapidly. The quality has improved and al- though the demand is not so strong, dealers are keeping floors clcan. It appears that shortly there will be a surplus of eggs ovcr domestic needs and dealers are planning oiling operations with the intention of storing eggs.

Paying prices for eggs weakened slightly during the week and op- erators of grading stations are quoting producers for ungraded eggs AL 31-32. AM 29-30. AP 23- 24, B 36-27. C 18-19.

Dairying

The official report from the Nova Scotia Creamery Association under date of April 21st states Factory Price 63c' Wholesale for one and two pound prints f.o.b. Halifax. Local Jobbing 05c.

On April 21st Montreal butter was quoted at 58 1-40 for No. 1. Solids with Torotno butter 57 1-2c- 58c for No. i Solids delivered To- ronlo.

Creamery butler quotations re- mained essentially the same dur- ing the past week on most markets in New Brunswick but lately. however, there are slight signs of weakness showing. in anticipa- tion of lower prices at the end of the month all distributors of but- ter are endeavouring to avoid any accumulation of that product and the same may he said of the other two Maritime Provinces. Nova Sco- tia. and Prince Edward Island.

Some reduction in price might occur at any time and since the announcement has been received from Ottawa that a five cent low- erlng in price is to take place on the first of May extreme caution in buying is very prevalent. floor price for butter will be no per pound on deliveries in Oratorio and Quebec. In Halifax it may be about one cent higher and in Van- couver about three-quarters of a cent lower. The wholesale mar- ket will therefore be maintained st 53c per pounii on the basis of delivery at St. John, New Bruns- wick; Halifax. Nova Scotia; Mon- treal; and Toronto. The price will be 52 1-2:: basis delivery Vancou- ver.

There has been no official state- ment come through from the Dairy ProducLs Board as yet on the purchasing of this butter and no further information can be given until that statement is re- ceived. We understand that this price is based on deliveries into storage at which time we under- stand the butter will be purchased. Further information will be given on this subject within the course of a few days when more accurate information will be received.
