The Boston Post warned that “the greatest constitutional crisis since the civil war is at hand." The New York Post, new deal to the last ditch, predicted the coming struggle, "greatest since slavery." would de- side "whether this country is to be governed as other democracies are. by the votes of a. majority of its people, or whether it will continue to bc ruled by five elderly and con- servative men“—the so-called tory bloc of the supreme court.

While the warning “dictatorship ahead" thundered again as in last year's eection-climpaign, the New York Times‘ Washington corre- spondent said independent and semi official checks indicated the Presl- dent's plan would be passed by Congress in substantially the form recommended.

Senate Poll

A poll of the Senate taken by the New York Herald Tribune showed 31 senators for the proposed increase of the Supreme Court's membership, 23 against and ~12 non- committal.

ST. JOHN'S. Nflxi, Feb. 7 — A field of Arctic ice prmsed more fiercely than ever against New- foundiands east coast tonight after a prevailing northeast. wind that had driven it down from the north, veered to the east.

The steamship Fort Amherst was able to break through the eight- mile wide icefleld yesterday and enter st. John's, but the harbor was packed so densely she could not dock.

Other ships were unable to enter or leave the port yesterday despite the fact. the pack swelled enough to allow the Fort Amherst pass thmugh. Harbor authorities said the Fort Amherst would be unable to leave port now since the easterly wind had increased the density of the pack.

Crowds of people swarmed around the Amherst in mid-harbor today.
