A youth of seventeen llvlng in a vlllilge thirty miles from a larlfi city, suffered greatly at home with asthma, but was free of all sym- ptoms durlxlg any stay in the city. He was not on a farm-no horses, cattle. dog; pr cats-from which he could get anything to cause the symptoms. Naturally he wanted t0‘ go to the clty to llve where he could be free of the asthmatic attacks and get somewhere ln llfe. By a change of circumstances the family bullt a new house ln the village and for some “unaccount- able” relFOll, th boy had no further attacks of ' thma.

There was. no change 1n the manner of llfe but. much of the old furniture-wags, mattremes cur- tains-were disposed of, as were also various other articles of fumi- ture. What had brought rellef to this youth?

In the old home there were cer- tain dusts that irritated nose, throat, and lining of the large and al"o the very small bronlchial tubes. When this lining gets lrrlt- ated ll: pours out. liquid just as when the llnlng of your nose gets irritated and you have what ls called nasal catarrl-i. When this llquld gets thick and becomes mucous it 1s naturally harder for 1t. to be. removed and s0 a tiny plug forms which cause= the spasm or asthmatic attack until if ls re- moved.

That. many children and young people are “sensitive” t.o house dust ha; been known for some tune, Dr. R. A. Cooke pointing out. this fact to his fellow research workers l.n the Journal of Immunology 1n 1922. Dr. Henry N. Pratt, Boston. 1n the Journal of Allergy, reports his study of reventy-one children who suffered with asthma during the entire year, not. those who had the asthmatic attacks only during the vanlous pollen seasons (summer or June fever or the fall hay fever). The ages range from one to twelve years.

The dust was obtained by vacuum cleaner from the upholstery, bed- ding and floors from seven typical homea was collected. weighed, and extracted by means of ether. ster- llized and bottled. The report of Dr. Pratt's study of these 71 asth- matic children states:

“By means of skin tests It. has been determined that. about 79 per- cent of children between the ages of one and twelve years who stiffer with asthma all the year round are senntlve to house dust. extract."
