'l'llE CURRENCY.

In our last “'cdnesday’s edition, we concluded some remarks on the Ftsltt‘tles, in which we suggested the ; topi-io-ty of engagingin them at once It nor there was a time iii the histo- ty of this Colony that demanded the recesstty for doing so, it is now—but we may expect to achieve nothing ef- fectually, unless the Colonial Legisla- tnic step forward to aid the enter- tithe. Into their hands we place this all-important question, hoping that as judicious connsellorsthey will treat it tn a way that may promote the permanent interests ofthis Island.

There is, however, another ques- tion itt Connexion with the Fisheries, that should demand our most serious attention—and that is, the CURRENCY ut' Prince Edward Island—a matter

i-nlly abandoned to the interests at some, whose stake does not depend altogether on the resources and ener- gies of the colony. “'e are in earnest—and we cannot Conceive why this merely mooted question should not be settled. Are we too rich or too peor and dejected, that no effort should be made ? Or. are we void «l' intelligence—0f moral principle and of commercial knowledge—that he should not probe this wound in our political health to its very CUTE? Would there he a fact more astounding to the good sense ofsome nl our neighbours abroad, were we to state that at the this moment there is not a colonial law in exist- ri co to provent the present illicit and fraudulent trafﬁc in the article of our ( 'nrrt-ncy—and that there are no rc- gnlations for it, beyond those which :he public at any time may adopt ? This is a moral censure laying to our charge, and we trust that the Legiso tutors of our land, will speedily wipe away the stain that disﬁgures the credit ofPrince Edward Island.

We ask, how mold specie be retained here, while our Paper Money is everywhere re- liisetl (except amongst ourselves) even should its value he still tnore en- hanced, and a further license given to extend the fraud in the currency of this colony? If we were to embark lit a trade with Southern America— the \Vest Indies—Spain or Portugal; oid obtain the produce of the for- iner,and the money ofthe latter,in ex- change for our ﬁsh &c,is it to be sup- posed for a moment, that the tide of our natural wealth would return upon its at once and overwhelm us with “'est Indian produce or Mexican dollars 9 By no means;-—if pre- cautionary measures are not adopted for securing the advantages which we have already in our power,we should
