House of Commons. THE REDISTRIBUTION BILL

Ortawa, June 17.

The Re-distribution Bill is still being dis- cussed in committee. Yesterday Haggart took the opportunity of McCarthy being in his seat to refer to the speech of the latter, when he referred to him (Haggart) personally. He made a brilliant speech, showing the members of North Simcoe that while he was not the slave of the Government, as no one said he was or desired him to be so, he (Mr. Haggart) would claim the same right for every other member on the Conservative side of the House. There were none of the Conservative members asked to be slaves of their party. What did the statement of McUarthy mean that the Government was strong enough now to do what was right ? Did it signify that if the Government was not so strong they might be just in doing what was wrong? Whether weak or strong the Government intended to do what was right, amd it was for these reasons that they desired the support of their followers, and for these reasons alune. He then referred to the amendment of Mills, unde: which it would be possible to make a gerrymander of the very worst kind. The grits proceeded tc talk against time until the committee rose,

ln the Preshyterian Assembly the names of Rev. J. Sedgwick, Dr. A. B. McKay, James Crott, David Laird and David Morice were added to the list of delegates to the Presby- terian Council.

Thirty-six churches and manses were built last year west of Winnipeg, at a value of $60,000 The statistical report showed seedy increase in membership in church. The total income in 1875 was $982,672, this year $2,(03,239 The revenue more than doubled in 17 years. The increase over last year was $1,941. The record report showed 47,000 circulation. The widows and orphans fund of the Maritime Provinces has a capital of $83,- QUO, added this year, $3,223. Eighteen widows and four orphans are on the fund. Seventy-eight widows are on the western sec- tion fand; amounts paid, $13,453, invested, $138,000. Forty-four widows are on the Church of Scotland synod widows fund. This fund has a capital of $116,000. Receipts cover expenditure.
