As I looked st Jonathan slumped in his chair, raging a thimself, I marveiled at and pitied his stupidity. This man of power, this financial shark had been thoroughly beaten by s chit 0f a girl. a. girl of the streets. Her apparent stupidity had blinded and misled him.

“Can't you pay her off?" I stroked his hand. He seemed so utterly helpless.

"I’ve paid her and paid her and paid her. I'd be ashamed to say how much money I've given her." ,

We said good night at the door. Jonathan and I, a casual goodnight. I was not angry. I had no right. to be. I wasn't hurt. I had no feeling to hurt. I was numbed.

As I entered the hail I gathered the impressions that someone had been there Just before me. The house was quiet. only a dim light was burning at. the foot of the stairs.

I started up toward my room. when I reached the turn at the sec- ond landing I saw a figure sltnking silently along ahead of me!

Closely connected with tics work is the Record cf Performance work, which is very important since the milk pail is s. sure way of knowing our good cows from the ‘ poor ones, thus lessening the cost of production by disposing of poorer animals.

Perhaps one of the greatest be- nefits derived from this type of work is the spirit of co-operatlon since it embraces not only Club members and their families but Supervisors and Live Stock Breed- ers in general.

THE MOULDING 0F GOOD CITIZENS A NOBLE TASK

M a recent Toronto conference of the Ontario Temperance Feder- ation considerable serious consi- deration was given to what might be termed ‘moulding young, raw material of child! and youth so as to represent citizenship of the highwt type. Raffles and games of chance as a nteans of raising mcn- ey for home and school work in Ontario did not meet with favor at this conference,

Mrs. Reece, Ohalnnan of the Council Presidents’ Conference. in submitting her report, stated, "that a resolution opposing these m- thods of money raising was carried unanimously." The conference also considered bridges, euchres and dances as not. desirable or neces- sary in the work.

It is difficult for me to .. your question because of the fact that I am so fully convinced that the use of cigarettes, especially by the young, is always harmful. In fact, I believe that the use of any form of tobacco is harmful, espe- cially before the age of twenty. I am fully convinced that cigarette smoking is the most harmful of the many ways in which tobacco may be used. I believe that it promotes the development of can- cer in the lips, tongue and throat. Btatistics of cancer of this kind show that it exists almost entirely among men. Up to the last few years, women did not generally 1n- dulge in cigarette smoking. Now, as increasing numibers of women are smoking cigarettes, we may ex- Doct t0 see an increase in cancer of the lips, tongue and tin-oat, 'i‘here is no justification for the cigarette habit froth any point of view.
