Srr,—Anyone with half an eye can see misrepresentation and untruth stamped upon the face of the above quotation taken from Dr. Melntyre’s little bounty speech, as it appeared in the J’atriot. Every one knows that twelve men do not go in a sail- ing boat fishing. Half that number is more than usually go; one-fourth the number would be nearer the truth. But Mr. Me- Intyre said that there were tweive inthe in- stance to which he referred, and, strange to say, there were nine Conservatives among them and three Grits; in other words, there were nine wise and three foolish. The three, he said, did'nt get their bounty, but tue nine did. Now, I have no hesitation in pronouncing this yarn of Mr. MclIntyre’s a pure invention of his own. I dare and defy him to give the names of the twelve, or any one of them. If he has any regard for the truth let him come out over his own name and give the names. He dere not do it, for his little story is false, and he knows it.

Post Office at China Point.

Sir,—Rumor says that the Post Office here is to be moved back to Mr. Gleesgn’s. If so, it will be much against the will of the people. The present Postmaster deserves great credit for the efficient manner in which he has prepared things for the ac- commodation of the public. The receiving and delivering of mail matter is so regulated as to secure perfect privacy. Again, should it be taken back, what security have we that it will not be thrown up, as before, at the must critical time of the year/ Any- way, several families never allowed their mails to come to this Post Office at its for- mer location. Therefore, I but echo the voice of the people in saying ‘‘ Let well enough alone.”

Free Rum or Cider—Which?

Whether the proposed constitutional amend- mentin Massachusetts against rum is also against cider, is being, as it ought to be well agitated. We believe fruit-growers feel about manufacturing a home beverage somewhat like the woman whom the learned Dr. Aber- nethy once remonstrated with for mutilating her husband’s face and head with her finger- nails in a family jar. Said the worthy <doct- or,—Madam, are you not ashamed, treating the head of this family thus ?—in fact, your head, madam.” The virago retorted fiercely, ** Well, doctor, if that be true, haven't I a right to scratch my own head?” It seems to us, prohibition advocates should reflect that, so long as humanity is unfitted to its sur- roundings and conditions of life, so long evil will exist, and human beings foolishly try to **drown misery ” with strong drink. But in- crease human happiness by every possible means ; iessen that motner’s burden that she may bear more healthy children ; then ameli- orote their hunger, disease, and pain by better physical as well as moral training,and you will bave plucked out the most deadly fang of the monster—intemperance, while farmers and fruit-growers are left to pursue an honest call- ing. Acting upon this precept, we would go farther and proclaim that thousands of families are now suffering with troubles that scores of persons have tried to relieve with strong drink. ‘‘Hot lemonade with a stick,” “rock and rye” are familiar recipes. Tem- perance people should teach others to find some better remedy for hacking coughs, bron- chial irritations, catarrhal inflammation, rheu- matisin, and neuralgia than whiskey. Said a well known Boston merchant, recently, to a perty of friends: ‘‘I used to resort to whiskey when attacked with rheumatism and neuralgia. But I know a remedy—Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment—that will fix it for me every time Truly, it is the most certain remedy known forany pain or inflammation. A Diphtheria Scare.

There is no doubt but that diphtheria in its worst form is very prevalent in many cities and small towns. At the same time; that fact is no reason for frightening people out of their wits, with every new case of sore throat. Even ulcerated sore throat is bad enough, and no person would have that for fun. Yet hun- dreds of persons are said to have had diph theria who only had a severe sore throat. The form of sore throat which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people call quinsy.

“Putrid sore throat,” known long before diphtheria, was probably a form of diphtheria, and very dangerous, An old hospital nurse in Boston says: ‘“‘It ain't the clear cold of winter that lays people up with colds, catarrh,"and sore throats, and lays the child- ren low with diphtheria; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet slushy days.’ This is very true, and explains why those troubles are so prevalent this unusually soft rainy winter; the air, in fact, is laden with poisonous vapors. The first sympthoms of true diph- theria are much like those of a heavy cold on the lungs. There is fever, some stupor, and difficulty in breathing. Very sharp pains are otten felt in the neck glands, just below the ear, The tongue is coated, the throat and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which in- crease and turn toa dirty yellow or brown color next appear, and a peculiar odor totally unlike ulcerated sore throatisnoticeable. If the disease is of the black or malignant type nothing but a miracle can restore the patients to their former good health. Very many re- liabie people claim to have cured severe cases of diphtheria with Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment. Be that as it may, it is worth try- ing, because so easily used internally, dropped on sugar or as a gargle, and bathing for ex- ternal use. We know from experience that it will cure a common sore throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, eatarrh, bronchitis, croup, etc,, as promptly as the good old Johnson's Liniment. If it cures them, why
