if possible, the cause of the attack, Dr. Canaiff, medical officer of health, visited the place on Saturday last. He found certain conditions, any of which might, under favorable circumstances, produce disease with choleric symptoms. A sink was placed close by the kitchen door, which every person iu the house had to pass in going to the yard and back build- ings This sink connected with the privy by a pipe, and apother pipe from the privy entered the street sewer. The position in which the pipes were placed was such that washing out of the pit was impossible.

Bad ventilation, imperfect sewage, foul gases arising in houses from siuks, existence of dirt-heaps, decomposing vegetable matter, etc., will introduce the terrible disease in any community, especially in the hot summer months, and will assist in spreading i.

There is a hum in herring, not in quan- tity so far, but in size. Fishermen feel cheerful at the thought of having a good ca'ch of the present size when the proper time arrives. They are ‘‘so big” now-a- days that they look like a Cross-breed between a codfish and a mackerel. They are pot quite as large as a decent codfish— that’s a fact—but it would take quite a respectable mackerel to out-do them, They are fat and fry well, and if you were only up here yourself, your voice might add additienal weight to their edible qualities; that is if Editors are capable of anything less than salmon steaks and roast beef.

The gloom of the tragedy of Barbara Weit reached even here. Some of the young folks who perished were well known ‘o many in this villages We are born to laugh and weep.
