New York, July 17.—Red Star Line steamship Westernland arrived from Ant- werp to-day with a case of smallpox on board. The steamship has been quaran- tined.
New York, July 17.—Among the sengers for Europe to-day was Commodore Slavin, president of the American Con- tracting and Dredging Co., whv goes to Paris to arrange the final contract with the Panama Canal Co., for the completion of the canal at a cost of two hundred million dollars.
Toronto, July 17.—The Salvation Army in Eylington, in spite of several previous warnings, and its own promise, held a knee drill in the road opposite Oulcott’s hotel in the suburbs. Reeve Wilson, who was hav- ing supper at the hotel, came out and or- dered the arrest of the leaders. On one, a man named Whelan from the army train- ing school, the magistrate imposed a fine with the option of ten days in jail, and Whelan chose the latter.

At Mount Pleasant, Fla., Frances Cooper, a colored women, invited three other negro women, neighbors, to dinner. After dinner the three guests were taken with convulsions, and one expired in great agony. Investigation established the fact of poisoning, and the woman confessed that she had a grudge against these women, arising through some neighborhood quarrel, and had placed fvermin poison in a dish of butter beans for the purpose of poisoning them.
The Japan Gazette of the 29th ult. con- tains intelligence which has been received at Hong Kong from Kiaying Chau, a pre- fecture in the northeast of Kwang Tung, that early on the morning of the 2d the Chau Ping and? Ping Yuen districts were flooded by the bursting of a water spout or tornado, described by the Chinese as a water dragon, and the level country was flooded with nearly 36 feet of water. The villages of Ha-Ku-Haui, im the Ping Yueng district, Cueong, Tan, Hop Lai, Sam Chan Kin and Sam-Po-Hui, in the Chan Ping district, were overtliowed, many houses being wholly away,
