A-~ for the scenery, it defies description in mountain, lake and valley. Atthe Little Bras d’Or picnic there were Sevtch Highlanders, Irish and Acadians, all harmonious, living and thriving together. The reception to Sir Hibbert Tupper and myself was very enthusia-tie. The people down by the sea are proud of their public men. The name of Sir John Thompson is dear to them all; they actually revere his memory. Noth- ing could exceed the heartiness of the reception given Sir Hibbert Tupper. He iz a great favorite with all classes, and looked upon as one of the men of great- est promise. The Sydney banquet was an unqualified success. Sir Hibbert’s speech was one of the best I have ever heard, and it is very much to he re vretied that there were not first-class facilities for reporting it. manity. The greatest want and hanlship is not to be found among those who d; nothing but farm—in fact 1 don’t think

much want is to be found amongst those. It is to be found amongst those who are endeavouring to farm «nd fish at the same time. Thisclass is now very numerous. Phe majority of farmers who are now en- gaged iu fishing cannot very well get out uf it, for, having neglected their farme, tishing in now their main dependence, and if th y leave that to give their sole atten- tion to farming, they are liable to lo-e their firms as they will eventually, anvhow.

But let us look at the case of those whose sole dependence is the fishing industry. Everyone knows that this season, this in- dustry has been a failure. Everyore knows that much. -—But how many know what that failure implies? A great many know that the failure of the fishing industry is a calamity; but how many know the extent of that calamity? The fishing industry is becoming less and leas profitable year by year. Last year it was a failure and so it was the year before, and its fa:lure caus- ed untold want and suffering: this year it will entail starvation.

Hundreds of men and their families are dependent on this industry for a livelihood. While the fishing is in prospect, they man age to live—thai is, they get credit; but when the fishing season is over and has proved a failure,—as it invariably does now-a-daye,—the consequene is that their credit is stopped and with it their means of living. There are many such families along the west coast of P. E. Island from West Cape to North Cape. I have seen them myself. I have seen families living in fish stages, in the midst of dirt an1 filth and squalor and drunkenness such as could not be surpassed by the slums of New York or London.”

Thie is the first intimation we have had that the crops of this year are not, upop the whole, fairly well up to the average, notwithstanding the midsummer drought; and we earnestly hope that the aera of the shortage is small or that our correspon- dent bas unintentionally overdrawn the picture. The comparative failure of the fisheries is certainly a fact to be dep'ored, thongh we hope that the result will not be so grevious as the writer anticipates.

A DESERTED TOWN,

A correspondent of the Chicago Inter- Ocean tells an interesting little story of a town without an inhabitant. Near the east of the Sierra Mountains, at an alti- tude of about eight thousand feet, isa Jake. Owing to the altitude, the cold is severe and the ice apon the lake does not wholly disappear until August. There is a very pretty outlook from some of the higher points, for the Sacrameuto valley, with iis cultivated fields, can be seen ninety miles away,and on nearer slopes are orange groves and olive trees and other luxuriant- ly growing vegetation. On the shoves of this lake—Meadow Lake—there was in 1867 a busy and prosperous town of six thousand inhabitants. A year later there was notan inhabitant left. The snows tilled the streets and drifted to the tops of the houses,and so ramained for many months. The people left and there was no one even to clear a pathway. The cor- respondent fays as years went by the build- ings succumbed to the elements and weight of accumulated snow and one after the other were Jevelled to the ground. The traveller who is hardy enough to climb the mountain trail that leads to the deserted city can see signs of the prosperity that existed there nearly thirty years ago. Those who left so suddenly could not afford, to take their effects with them, because it was cheaper to buy others than to pay for hauling their own over the almost nnpase- ible trails. Soamongthe ruing can be found tables, chairs, stoves and other eook- ing utensils by the hundreds. Inthe few houses still standing, better built than those of their brothers’ are lace curtains, Brussels carpet-, pictures and upholstered farniture; for these old miners, when they were prosperous thought nothing of paying fifty dollars freight on a twenty-dollar article.
