Dear Editor:

I would like to enlist support of UPEI students in an effort to have a lighted crosswalk constructed from the Marysfield housing area, across the Trans-Canada highway to the main entrance of the University.

It is very obvious that a dangerous situation exists here. As many as one hundred crossings and perhaps many more occur in this area. The speed, and regularity of the traffic combined with a completely unprotected area for pedestrians is, I fear, soon to lead to fatality.

I would like to ask students to join me and write the appropriate authorities concerning the Situation and any other situation you may be aware of regarding access to UPEI (The authorities I have chosen are the Board of governors, President Elliot and the city of Charlottetown.)

Dear Editor: As I was walking by the pit the other cay, I noticed a paper in the old GEM box. It was not the GEM but a new paper called temporarily "Panther Magazine".

The new paper seemed a bit odd at first, but I _ loved the new format. As a reader, the format was easier to hold, I didn’t feel that a whole table was needed in order to read it, and another plus was the fact that it was STAPLED, so I didn’t have to struggle with loose pages.

Dear Editor: At the beginning of the school year, the UPEI

grounds sprouted little signs warning people not to walk on the grass due to the danger of herbicides or pesticides. A spray wagon was seen trundling about the campus, dripping its deadly cargo in pools and tunnels all over the walkways. Children were observed playing in one of the sprayed areas. Shoes contaminated with the spray go home to walk on living room rugs where pets and children will play. A horse was seen being grazed by the railway which is said to have been sprayed with herbicides for decades.

How can this place set itself up to be a leader in improved living when it allows this travesty? How can it boast a department concerned with PEI’s environment and "quality of life" when it prefers poisons to dandelions?

Before you start wondering if we’re operating on a different calendar than 1990, this publication has been coming out Friday instead of Thursday for reasons beyond our control (i.e. at the printer’s shop).
