Greetings!

Just a short note from your friendly VP External. It has been a busy semester so far here at the Student Union, with conferences, meetings, and

more meetings one certainly gains a perspective of ©

how involved and fascinating on-campus politics can really be. So, while I’m on the subject, if you ever see a position vacant with the student union, why not give it a shot? I often here comments such as, "I don’t have any experience" or "I don’t enjoy speaking in front of large crowds." One can only gain experience by trying. Once you’ve tried it, you'll like it - believe me.

Volunteers are the backbone of a Student Union. Several committees and organizations on campus require volunteers in order for these groups to function properly. Volunteers provide vital information input, provide badly needed hands and energy and volunteers provide spirit. Think about putting some time into your university and get involved. The best part of volunteering is realizing that there are results and that you’ve played a part in making UPEI an institution to feel proud about.

So now that I am plugging committees and organizations, and now that I’ve got you hooked I can tell you that you can submit your name at the Barn (just walk toward Towers). Two committees that might interest you are the CFS committee and the Environmental Action ("Green") Committee. As you know, UPEI is a proud member of the Canadian Federation of Students. The CFS committee would discuss campaigns for students, lobby actions and would prepare for certain events such as the recent National Student Day. If you are interested in letting the government know just how dissatisfied you are about how they treat you as a student then this is a committee you would be interested in.

The Environmental Action Committee is a new group or campus, just accepted by Student Council as a standing committee. This group will be comprised of students and members of the public who are genuinely concerned about the state of our

planet. Public education, lobbying and researching would be some of the important mandates this committee would follow. This work would not only involve the universities impact on the environment but would also scrutinize governmental policies and individual business’s environmental conscience. Remember that it is all too easy to pass the back on this issue - get involved!
