RULES
1. When you have been al- erted by the‘alarm, shout— ed warnings,or the sensa- tion of smoke or fire:'
(a) If there is smoke in the room, keep low to the floor. , ’
(b) Before passing through ag
any doors, feel the metal door knob._If it is hot, do not open the door.
(c) Before opening a door, brace yourself against the door, open it slightly. If heat or heavy smoke is PIE! sent, close the door and
stay in the room.
(d) If you can not leave the room open the windows — from the top to let out the heat and smoke - and from the bot- tom to let in fresh air. _ (e) To attract the fire dep— artment's attention, if you are trapped, hang an object 0 out the window. (In a dormit— ory room use a bed sheet, elsewhere, use a jacket,shirt or anything that will attract attention.) If there is a phone in the room, call the fire department and report that you are trapped, give the room number and the name of the dormitory or building. (f) If you leave the room, close all doors as you esit. (g)Go to the nearest exit or stairs; do not use the ele- vator.
(h)If the nearest exit is. blocked by fire, heat, or smoke, go to an alternate exit.
(1) If all exits from the floor are blocked, go back to your room, close the door, open the windows and shout for help. I
U) After evacuating a build— ing, stand clear; emergency

(k) Follow the directions of firemen and security person- nel.
2. If you discover or suspect a fire:
(a) Sound the building fire alarm. Where there is no fire alarm in the building, warn the other occupants by knock- ing on doors and shouting a warning.
(b) 'Call the fire department — on Campus, call 894-4609, the Security Department. Give as much information as possi——
ble to the Security Clerk. (c) Attempt the rescue of
,others only if you can do so
safely. v
(d) Fire extinguishers
should be used only after the alarm has been sounded and a reliable person is assigned
,to notify the fire department,
by telephone. Then, dhly if you feel capable, a gmall in- cipient fire may be stopped by an extinguisher. Even if the fire is put out, the fire department should be called.
-The fire extinguishers should
always be kept full to avoid
able extinguisher.
(e) It is unlawful to tamper with, disturb, or render useless any type of fire equi —pment or fire extinguisher, interior fire hose, or auto— matic fire alarm system pro- vided for the fire protection and safety of the occupants of University buildings.
3. Protect yourself, don't: (a)‘Abuse electrical supply- use of electrical "octopuses" to obtain a maximum number of outlets_can result in the overload of circuits.

(c) Leave open flame sources— candles, bunsen burners, etc. should never be left unattend —ed. All open flames should be extinguished, even if be— ing left alone for the short- est time. /
4. These are prohibited in dormitories and individual rooms:
(a) Leaving waste storage- All waste should be disposed of as soon as possible. Sur- plus material should be store -ed in a safe place, not in corridors of stairways.
(b) Clutter in corridors and

ge are prohibited by law in'

all exit ways. .Blocked exit ways have been the cause of "chain reaction" pile ups of fallen people.
(c) Storing flammable liquids gasoline or gasoline driven motors, ether, paint, glue, etc. must not be stored in residential buildings, In v laboratories, this type of storage is limited to specif: ic quantities and containers. This is all for your own safe —ty. H
