SPUD TREK ’91

On the past weekend, U.P.E.I. held it’s first ever CUSID Debating tournament (CUSID is the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate). Four universities; Dalhousie, U.N.B (Fredericton Campus), Saint Thomas, and Mount Allison sent teams. There was a total of 24 debaters (including 3 from P.E.I.) and Finegan the dog (no, he wasn’t a debater, he was a judge). This was a good number for our first tour- nament, enough for good debates, but not so many as io make the tabulation of results difficult.

[Twelve members of the Debating Society were kept gusy all day organizing, running results, setting up, reparing meals, judging, and debating. We metin he Faculty Lounge for briefings at 8:15. Over the ‘ollowing 10 hours, we held 6 rounds of debating. At 00 we broke for dinner, then at about 8:30 we held he final round, with President Eliot as a guest judge. fhe resolution for the final round was ‘‘Be it re- olved that: Ex Eodum Fonte Fides et Scientia’’, or ‘rom the same source, faith and knowledge.’’, the notto of Saint Dunstan’s University. The Govern- nent, Mount Allison’s B team, not knowing the irigin of the resolution chose to define the ‘source’ to ye parents and debated the importance of parents as

he prime source of faith and knowledge for the next eneration. After the debate, President Eliot provided he origin of the resolution, and his analysis of the lebate.
