It is now proposed to erect the May-la- len I-lands into a separate constituency, The population of the islands 1s about 5,060 and the voters number seme 900, so that they would make a rather small elec- tora! division, The reason for the change is geographical, however, and not one of population The Magdalens are more than hundred miles from the nearest part of Quebec, and only fifty from Noea Scotia, They have little or no interest in eommon with the mainland, and judicially, muni- cipally and educationally are separate from the county of Gaspe,to which they are attached for representative purposes. If the bill passes, they will make a nice easy constituency for the man who wire their good will.

The Briti-h Board of Trade returns for the twelve months of 1894 indicate in creased patronage of Canadian food prof ducts by the British consumer. Larger bnyings are recorded in many of cur staples £230,800 more of sheep, £100,- 600 more of cheere, £350,000 more of timber, £490,000 more cf fixh, £17,060 more of eggs. The total increases agygre- gate £489,000, or nearly 5 per cent more than in 1893. There is a falling off in butter, showing that we are not yet send- ing the right article for the fastidious Briton. Our imports have declined near- ly $1,306,900 from Britain during the year, owing to the period of cautious bay ing which has prevailed,

THE WAR IN THE FAST.

A despatch from Pekin says that orders have been issued from the throne for the arrest of the three generals who com- manded the Chinese troop: at Port Ar- thur.

A despatch to the Central News from Kaiping says General Nogi, who com- manded the Japanere troop: in the battle that eccurred there lately, reports that his troops took possession of Kaip:ng at ten in the forenoon. Over 200 Chinese are known to have been killed and 150 taken prisoners. The number wounded is un- known. The Chinese force is said to have numbered 4,000, Scouts report that 10,- 000 Chinese troops, under General Set, who were moving te support Kaiping, re- tired upon Yinghbow, when they learned the result of the engagement.

The Berlin Cologne Gazette advises the government of Japan to make peace with China at once. It will be a danger- ous thing for Japan, the Gazette says, if her desire for%the fruits of vietory increase, as her demands might become so exagger- ated that the European powers could no! allow China to concede them.

Preparations are rapidly advancing for the defence of Pekin. There is every in- dication that the next blow of the war will be struck at this, the one vital spot of the Chinese empire.

Union with Newrovxptaxp.—The St. John Sun thinks that from the Canadian point of view the strongest reason for seek- ing union with Newfoundland is the need of concert in the dealing with the British American fishery question, and that a fishery treaty between the United States and Newfoundland might virtually destroy the value of Canadian fi-hing right-, and the fi-heries of Newfoundland would be similiarly affected if Canadian diplomacy did not regard them, The Bond-Blain treaty, which was unfortunate for New- f undland, was equally bad for Canada. Fortunately the evil was averted. But while Canada and Newfoundland remain apart there is always the danger that one evuntry will be injured in the diplomacy
