It is no exaggeration to say that never since I came t0 Tignish (over 12 years ago) has there been so much want in the country... On1y yesterday, a man 1iving on 25 acres and who genera11y raises enough potatoes t0 1ast him through the winter, came a distance of 9 mi1es with a sma11 jag (sic) of wood which he exchanged for a few groceries and 12 1bs. of corn mea1. He dec1ared that he 1eft his wife and 2 chiîdren at home without a partic1e of food of any kind, and that these few pounds was a11 he cou1d 100k too with any certainty. This case is on1y one of many I might quote, with the difference that most of those poverty—stricken peop1e have no wood to bring.
