THe second match between the English and Australian cricket teams was begun on Tuesday. In the first -inmings England scored 363, and Australia 121. QUEBEC OUTDOES ITSELF, (QuEBEC, July 22.

Our ancient capital vutdid itself in the eclat with which it celebrated the conferring ¥ the Baretta upon His Eminence Cardinal laschereau. Large crowds were in the ‘ity, and the day was observed as a general holiday,

The streets thr ugh which the pro ession passed were densely packed with a swelter- ing mass of humamty. It required all the exertions of the troopers of the cavalry school corps to make a passage for the pro cession,

The city presented a fine appearance, but the route of the procession being short, the decorations were most ly centered in one spot. The procession, while not a large one, was remarkably representative. Mem- bers of the Legislative Assembly and of the House of Commons, Judges, Senators, members of the City Council, and members of the Privy Council, took part in it.

His Eminence the Cardinal, accompanied by Mgr. ©’Brien, the Papal messenger, rode in a carriage drawn byjfour horses and was frequently cheered. At the City Hall the children gathered there, sang a hymn and presented boquets of flowers.

Arrived at the alcove @rected in front of the Barilica, the procession, hitherto a civil demonstration, became transferred into a religious ceremonial.

The Basilica was prettily decorated, and was crowded to the very doors. His Lord- ship Bishop Gravel, of Nicolet, preached, and referred to; the honor conferred upon Canada. After some further ceremony, Mgr. O'Brien read the proclamation ap- pointing the Cardinal, and after his address handed the pontifical order to place the beretta upon the head of His Eminence, to Bishop Clinch of Toronto. This done, the service concluded with a grand Te Deum. The Cardinal, wearing a baretta, then ad- dressed the crowd outside from a temporary platform, and dispensed the pontitical bless- ing amid the salvos of artillery.

In the afternoon His Eminence enter- tained his guests at a banquet.

A YOUTHFUL MURDERER.

A Mother’s Lndiscretion.

Sr. Jonn, July 22.

News has been received of a sensational! murder by the four-year-old son of Richard Tufts. The victim isthe ten months’ old baby of E. D. Saratt. Some days ago Mrs. Saratt met Tufts on a bridge near her house, and while teasing him, said that he could not throw the baby, which she had on her arm, into the water. The boy immediately reached for the child. She then repeated the remark and left. On Monday she went out for ashort time, and upon returning found her baby gone. The remark she had made to the boy Tufts at once occurred to her, and upon a search being made the baby was found in the brovk dead. It is surmised that Tufts went to the house, took the baby out of its crib and threw it into the brook. He denies the crime.
