Update on UPEI Panthers Women’s Volleyball

The UPEI Panthers women’s volleyball team had their lifetime pursuit of making the 2005-2006 playoffs brutally demolished by Acadia last weekend. The Panthers will play out the rest of the season as spoilers who have not made the playoffs. They will, however, affect the standings of their opponents, since they were eliminated from playoff contention. The sorrow generated from the must-win game had this writer consider permanently quitting his post such is his grief.

But if one was going to be eliminated from the playoffs - permanently, and until next year - one would want to do it in the fashion the Panthers did. The team battled admirably until the final moments of the game, which was lost in a hard-fought fifth set to the seventh ranked Acadia team. The win put the Axewomen into the last playoff spot.

On the bright side, Nikki Murphy of the Panthers had a 53% kill rate, a personal best. Lindsay Fisher managed 45 assists and Stephanie McKinnon attained 15 digs in their effort. The Panthers are busy in action this weekend, playing spoiler to Moncton and UNB on Saturday and Sunday. With a young team, however, next year will see the Panther return many players for another playoff run, which will hopefully make the fruits of their labour mote satisfying.
