A War Flurry in Wheat.

There was a wild scene around the wheat pit on the Produce Exehenge when the market opened for the day on the 10th inst. The war pews seemed to have turned all the bears into bulls of the most rampant sort. Everybody wanted to buy wheat. There was a a general rush and scramble of shouting brokers, each 10 hot haste to carry purchase wheat which seemed to come pouring ioto all the brokers’ offices in town. There was a struggling mob of brokers shouting, yesticulatiog and pushing around the platform at the northend of the big floor, where the graio brokers assemble, while the provision meno, at the other end of the building, were also having a sort of c:renus of their own.

the great feature, of course, being the gret food staple whieh the English and Russians will have to. buy from this country if they fall io cutting one another’s throats. Provisions were ac- tive and excited also, but the trading was not attended by the pandemonium that marked the grain ygambling—for gambling it was, very few of the pur- chasers being for the legitimate needs of commerce

The favorite speculative fancy was No. 2 red wheat for May delivery. These options, which closed on Wedues- day night at 93gc. per bushel, opened on the 10th inst., at 964¢., then, as quick us the sales could be made, advanced to €1.004. Such were the confusion and excitement that purchasers were made ata difference of le, a bushel in different parts of the crowd simultane- ously, and some sales, not officially re- ported, were made at $1.014, it is said. The velume of business was so great that 2,000,000 bushels of wheat were bought and sold in the first ten minutes Very many of the purchasing orders came from Wall street,and many others were from speculators who, by reason of favorable crop reports, had been led to sell wheat short, and who, when the boom came, were compelled to cover their shorts at once.

Half an hour after the market opened there Wasa momentary reaction and the price went back to 97ic. It soon recovered agein under renewed pur- chases to $4c.,.t whieh price May wheat closed late in the day, after the market had had several ups aud,downs,. The last figure tor June wheat was §1.002 and ior Jaly delivery $1.023. The extreme advance in wheat during the day was vc, per bushel,which means a difference of $560 on every load of 8,000 bushels, which is the smallest quantity dealt in on ‘Change on opitons. Unofficially it is said that there was no official report of the extent of the sales yesterday, but those who should know estimate that about 12,000,000 bushels of wheat were bought and sold on the one exchange alone.

Aside from wheat, the market for other grain was active and excited, but to a less extent of course. Corn advanc- ed 2c. and 2hc. per bushel, avd oats 4c. alte. There was a large legitimate buying of corn for export. Flour was very much inclined to boom. It went up 5c. to 30. per barrel, and many Western millers telegraphed their New York agents not to sell any even at that advance, but to hold for a further rise. Lard took arise tothe extent of 12¢, per 100 pounds, and provisions were decidedly stronger, Ocean steamship treights toand from Europe were in sympathy with the grain market. Cablegrams from Liverpool said that steamers couldn't be chartered — in London or Liverpoo! at any price. The closing price on Wednesday night from Baltimore to Cork for orders was 4s. per bushel. Yesterday the quotation was ds. 3d. There were only a few tramp steimers in New York yesterday, and one of these was engaged.
