Course Prepares Islanders for Emergencies

Charlottetown-- to the average citizen, preparing for

_ emergencies involves purchasing insurance, installing

smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and keeping the numbers of emergency response agencies near the telephone. To members of the local fire departments, the Canadian Red Cross or St. John Ambulance, emergency preparedness means extensive training courses, practice response exercises and regular updates and evaluation of the latest information on emergency preparedness and response techniques. Representatives of Island agencies responsible for responding to emergencies participated in a ‘‘manag- ing emergency operations’’ course that was held at the Justice institute facilities in Charlottetown, P.E.I. from January 13-15. Conducted by the provincial emergency measure organizations (EMO) ofthe P.E.I. Department of the Environment. The course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of EMO and the emergency operations centres including emergency operations, resource gathering, evacuation and re- entry procedures and public information.

Course participates included EMO volunteers who staff the five emergency operations centres in O'Leary, Summerside, Charlottetown, Montague and Souris. Also attending the course are representatives from the Canadian Coat Guard, St. John Ambulance, Canadian Red Cross, the Provincial Fire Marshall’s Office, the Association of P.E.I. Firefighters, Prince County and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals, the Environ- ment Emergency Response Team, the Department of Energy and Forestry and the town of Summerside. During the two and one-half days of training, partici- pants were involved in the simulated emergency Situations designed to utilize their response skills and expertise and will be required to make presentations on the exercises. When the course was completed, 30 additional persons in Prince Edward Island were trained in Emergency Preparedness and Response through their introduction to the philosophy, concepts and techniques of contemporary disaster management. The course was jointly sponsored by the Federal and Provincial Governments through the Joint Emergency ‘reparedness Program (JEPP) and the permission and assistance of the director and staff of the Atlantic
