** Men’s soccer plays at home against Mount Allison at 4:00 pm on Thursday October 6. They then play on the road against Mt. A on the 15th, and UNB on the 16th.

** Women’s soccer plays at home against Mt. A on Friday October 7th, at 4PM; against Monctonon Wednesday the 12th at 4PM; and versus ST. FX on Saturday the 15th at 2PM.

** Women’s field hockey plays at home against SMU on Saturday at 4PM, and on Sunday at noon onthe weekend of the 15th

mural Report

Intramural b’ball is off to a fast start with five teams making up the A divi- sion, and several more playing in the B division. The league has a good mix of former high school and varsity players in the A league, with high school, and experienced recreational players in the B league.

Attention all clubs!

Intramural volleyball wants you and your club to come on out and sign up to play in a co-ed semi-competitive fun league. Whether it be the Soc-Anth club, or those crazed Psychology stu- dents (psst. get the hint, come and sign up) all societies will be welcomed to show just how good they are. Any interested club reps should contact Ron Annear or Janice Robertson at the Field House immediately. The first night of league action will take place Wednes- day, October Sth. See you onthe court.

-- The men’s and women’s basketball, hockey and vol- leyball teams all began offi- cial practices on October 1.

-- Daryl Lavoie is the newest player to lace up a pair of skates for the men’s hockey team. The 5710", 174 pound lefty is expected to shore up the P’s blueline corps; he played the last two years with the Windsor Spitfires, gar- nering 39 points and 132 pen- alty minutes in 61 games. He joins a large recruiting class which also features

touted frontliners Mike Harding and Brett Kowan, both known for their smooth scoring moves.

-- The perennially undersized men’s team will need to see improvements from 6’7 sophomore pivot Greg Lucas, with the loss of power for- wards Brian McLennon and Dennis Smith from last year. Lucas is expected to play ma- jor minutes backing up posts Curtis Robinson and Jason Kielley.

-- Size won’t be a problem for their female counterparts, however, as the women’s team features four six-footers on this year’s roster, including second-year players Kara Saunders and Angela MaclIntrye, and_ rookie Charlene Woolaver.

-- The Atlantic Lotto Corpo- . ration has introduced Pro Line Sports gambling to the Mari- time region. This makes it possible for sports fans to le- gally bet on hockey, basket- ball, and football.

Corner Kicks: A look at UPEI soccer

HEADING INTO THIS PAST WEEKEND'S matches with league powers Acadia and Dalhousie, the women’s soccer

| team is undefeated with an impressive

2-0-0 record, good for six points. The soccer P’s have used an excellent mixture of youth and experi- ence to come up with early season wins over SMU and Moncton. UPEI took care of SMU inthe season opener with a 2-1 victory highlighted by rookie Lori-Ann Howard’s game-winning cor- ner kick, after coming off the bench. Howard, a Colonel Gray graduate, is one of ten first-timers on this year’s team. Another ‘rookie’ who has been impressive so far this season is goalie Katie LeClair. LeClair is a senior who has played field hockey for UNB and UPEI during the course of her univer- sity athletic career; but she has made the move to keeper this season, filling the hole left by the graduation of all- conference Alanna Taylor.

LeClair shined against SMU and Moncton allowing only one goalin each game and coming up big in a 4-1 win over Moncton at home. Against Moncton the story of the first half was fourth-year striker Jodi Dixon, who connected for two goals on a pair of headers before UDM could score a goal, early in the second half. Veteran forwards Dianne Stevenson and striker Sara Driscoll rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.

The men’s team started off the season on a good note, as they beat SMU in Halifax, knocking offthe Husk- ies 4-1. Player of the game Adrian Tompkins, a third year DVM student, scored along with David Thomson, Bruce Blain, and versatile rookie Grant Boswall. Like the women’s team, the men are carrying ten newcomers, and all have made some contribution so far.

Any dreams of an unbeaten sea- son ended the next time they laced up

their Umbros as they played defending league champions, the always tough ST. FX X-Men in Antigonish. Rookie Glen Miller scored the lone Panther goal ina 4-1 loss, as they dropped to 1-1 on the year.

Playing Memorial in thethird game of the season, the P’s saw many excel- lent scoring chances fall by the wayside as they battled out a tough 0-0 draw against Memorial on the home grass of MacAdam field. The game was a gruel- ling, physical battle which left even the spectators drained.

Last Wednesday in Moncton, the

P’s suffered a close 2-1 loss to the UDM Eagles to stay in fourth place with six points in the nine-team division. Bruce Blain scored the only Panther marker in the second half. Like the women, the men played a pair of games at home on the weekend against Dal and Acadia; all games were after press time.
