TAIPEI, Formosa (AP) -— The artillery comes raining down on Quemoy in a thunderous barrage.

Inside a bunker a Chinese Na- tionalist soldier sits calmly tally- ing each nearby explosion on a piece of paper. Elsewhere across the battered island the scene is repeated many times.

These are the counters. After each Chinese Communist shelling of the Nationalist fortress off the Red China coast they come up with a total that may make headlines around the world. BEGAN AT 41,000

“Reds pound Quemoy with rec- ord 41,000 rounds.” That’s the way it read Aug. 23- when the present Formosa crisis erupted.

On Sept, 11 it was “53,314 rounds fall on One oy." And again on Sept. 12 th total edged up to 57,746 shells in 5 hours 32 minutes.

How accurate are these totals?

“They are based on an accep-

. ted method and are about as ac-

curate as youcan get without sci- entific instruments,” says a U. S. defence command spokesman.

RALPH SHERMAN YEO

Funeral services for the late Mr. Ralph Sherman Yeo of St. John killed in a highway accidt cut at South Portland, Maine, were held from the Chapel of Malcolm and Dewitt, Pembnooke, Ontario. ’

Services were conducted by Rev. Sidney E. Lorman of Wesley United Church. Mr. Yeo died af- ter being struck by two cars in quick succession on the Maine State Turnpike.

He was 37, an employee of the Atlantic Sugar Refineries and was born at Fortune Cove, P.E.I. a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yeo, now of Pembnooke, Ont.

Among the survivors are his wife, the former Ruby Gorddn, three sons, Fenton, Ralph and Barr-y, all at home and his father, Mr. Charles Yen, and two brothers, Lorne Yeo, cumpec, P.E.I. and Lloyd Yeo, Pembrooke. ,
