San Francisco, Sept. 20.

Capt. Nelson, of the sch. Western Home, which has arrived in seventeen days from Alaska, reports the Arctic revenue cutter Thomas Corwin is lying at one of the small ports, unable to proceed owing to the im- mense floes oi ice. Ice this year has offer- ed more difficulties to voyagers of nortliern seas than has been known for years. It came down earlier than usual and packs thicker. There is hope, however, of the Corwin being able te proceed in her search fur the Jeannette and missing whalers as goon as a break in the ice occurs,

Michal Davitt, an [rish agitator, has ar- rived. A large procession of Irish civil and military sucieties received Davitt and es- corted him threugh the principal streets to the Grand Opera House building, which was densley packed. General W.S. Rose- cranz presiied. Davitt delivered an ad- dress on the Irish landlordism. The fol- lewing televram was submitted for the ap- proval of tlie audience and despatched :— ** To Land League, Dublin: One hundred thousand people welcome Davitt. Hold the harvest. No surrender to landlord tyranny. (Signed) W. S. Rosecranz, chairman. The demonstration throughout was most en- thusiastic.

Marysvitie, Mo., Sept. 20.

Dr. P. H. Talbott, editor of the ‘* Green- back Standard, was shot through the win- dow of his bedroom on Saturday night by an unknown assassin. The bullet also slightly wounded Mrs. Talbott. Talbott died on Sunday.

CorninG, Ohio, Sept. 20.

Striking miners attempted to come with- in the lines established by Ewing Guards. They responded with a volley of musketry. The fire was returned, and kept up fot five minutes. ‘I'he striking miners divided their forces into three parties, and simultane- ously attacked the troops. The Corning ywjiners were on two ridges, extending to the north and south of what is known as mine No. 3. The columu on the north side was 200 strong and well armed. The miners opened fire from both ridges, but scattered and fled precipitately after the troops had fired a few rounds. They made an effort afterwards to make another on. slaught, but could not succeed. The stiik- ing miners are said to be returning to their homes. The number in the attack is said to have been five hundred. It is thought there will be no further disturbance.

At Milltown on Satnrday, five men en- gaged in a fightina bar-room. John Han- eock was shot through the lungs and will die. Simon Hancock was shot in the breast dangerously Three others were also shot, but not badly hurt. Twenty-six shots were fired.

Derrorr, Sept. 20.

A terrible tragedy occurred at Sonesville, Hillsbale County, on Sunday afternoon. Henry Lindley, a hired man in the employ of Mr. Tiffany, who is supposed to have conceived 4 passion for his employer's second daughter Alice, called on her and shot her killing her instantly. Lindley then blew «ut his own brains, falling with the weapon under him. Theonly cause known to which the crime can be attributed is nunre- quited love. The murdered girl was eigh- teen years old.

Dayton, Ohio, Sept. 20.

Lee Bri mbaugh, a prominent attorney of Miamesbury, was killed this afternoon by George Ware, of Dayton. Brumbaugh has for sometime been suspected of criminal intimacy with Ware’s wife during the latters absence. Ware returned home unannoun’ eed this afternoon, found them together, shot Brumbaugh and then delivered himself np te the officers.

A STRANGER entered the barber shep of Mr. Locket, Pownal street, ‘‘ teok the chair” and was promptly shaved. SiXTY-ONE YEARS A LawyeR.—The senior member of the legal profession in P. E. Island departed this lite at Charlottetown. on the 16th inst., in the person of Sir Robert Hodg- son, the late Lieut. Governor of that Prov- ince. The deceased gentleman was admitted to the bar en the 26th September, 1519; and had he survived but ten days more he would have been in the profession for the period of Gl years. This long connexion with the law is of rare occurrence im any country; and few, if any, similar instances can be found in the Dominion.—-St. John Sun.

A Monster Meerine.--The meeting at Stanley last night was literally crewded. John Simpson, Esq., of Hope River, was appointed chairman, and R. McNeill, Esq., M D., was appointed Secretary. Eloquent speeches were delivered by Rev. Dr. Murray, Rev. Father McGillivray, and G. W. Millner, Esq. A resolution promising support to adoption of the Scott Act, on the 23rd, was carried with enthusiasm. J.C. Clarke, Esq., and others spoke briefly after which the meeting dis- persed.
