So Peter hopped along slowly until a. little way ahead oi him Johnny Chuck came out. of his house and started off toward the Smiling Pool. Then Peter hurried until he caught up with Johnny Chuck.

"Where are you going?" planted Peter. ft. was so hot that even that short run made him pant.

“For g swim." replied Johnny Zhuck briefly.

‘Tor what?" cried Peter, not sure that he had heard sright,

"For s. swim," repeated Johnny.

"But you can't swim!" crleo Peter.

"Who says I can't Swim?" de- manded Johnny crossly. The heat made him cross. It does that to many folks.

"I didn't know you can," Pater Ian-rely.

“Huh! You are like a lot of oth- er folks who say things they know nothing about. A lot. of them think I can't climb Just because they haven't seen mo in a tree, but I can." said Johnny Chuck.

Peter nodded. "I know you can." said he. "I've seen you. You don't do it often, but you can if you want to." '
