Peter Whelan‘s Birds column in the November 23rd edition of the Globe and Mail told of a large influx of Snowy owls to Ontario. Toronto had logand' 8 at a time were seen perched at Kettle Point on Lake Huron. Island birders should be on the alert for more sightings this year as winter commences. The first sighting this year came from John Hayden of Cherry Valley on November_ 30th. .

A red squirrel amassed an estimated cubic foot of pine cones (new growth) and piled them neatly like a pyramid on our lawn about ten feet frdn the base of the nearest pine tree.' A well worn path leads from the pile to the base of the tree. ‘ . r . ‘
