A STORY WITH A MORAL.

Mr. Bones of the firm of Fossil, Bones 8t Co., was one of those remarkable money-making men, whose uninterrupted success in trade had been the wonder and afforded the material for the gossip of the town for seven years. Being of it familiar turn of mind, he was frequently interrogated on the subject. and invariably gave as the secret of his success that he minded his own business. A gentleman met Mr. Bones on the Assanpiiik bridge. He was gazing intently on the dashing, foaming waters aatliey fell .on the darn. e was evidently in a brown study. Our friend ventured to disturb his cogitations. " Mr. Bones. tell me how to make a thousand dollars I” Mr.Bones continued looking intently at the water. At last he ventured to reply : “ Do you see that dam, my friend I” “I certainly do." . ‘ Well, here you may learn the secret of making money That water would waste away and be of no practical use to anybody, but for the dam. That dam turns it to good account makes it perform some useful purposes, and then suffers it to along. That large paper mil is kept in constant motion this economy. say months are fed in the manufacture of this article, paper, and intelligence is scattered broadcast over the land on the sheets that are daily turned out; and in the different processes through which it passes. mone is made. A Ralanxants Matt.—A'r a temperance meeting held in Alabama, about six years ago, Colonel Lcmanousky who had been twent -three years in the armies of Napoleon Bona- parte, addresse the meeting. e arose before the audience, _taIl, erect, and vigorous with a glow of health upon his cheek, and said :-

“ You see before you a man seventy years old; I have fought two hundred battles; have fourteen wounds on m lived thirty days on horse-flesh, with the bark of trees for my bread, snow and ice for my drink, the canopy of heaven for my covering, without stockings or shoes on my feet. and only a few re s for my clothing.‘ In the desert of Egypt, I have marche for days with a burning sun upon my tiaked head ; feet blistered in the scorching sand, and with eyes, nostrils, and month filled with dust and a thirst so tormenting, that I have opened the veins of my arms and sucked my own blood.
