Welcome to the Univer- sity of Prince Edward Is- land! May you have a good time here, and achieve your _ hopes.

Today, as I write these words, you are gathering, many of you to attend Frosh Week °87. I think of my own arrival here at the University of Toronto in the autumn of 1945. No sooner had I stepped off the train from Ottawa than I was assailed by questions and

doubts. Why was I here? Where did I go? Who were my roomates? Would I ever learn to live with these strangers? What did I want to study? And, as I re- membered the security of all those years at home and in school, another question

Welcome Back!

arose in my. mind: how long is four years?

You too will have doubts and questions in the next few days. Some will linger for a long time; oth- ers will be answered. We are here to help. We want you to feel at ease. And we can help you best if you ask us those questions. That was my first lesson as a freshman. I had to find the courage to tell of my igno- rance, a hard thing for any of us to admit at any time. Despite my fears, I was not repulsed. The answer was helpful, and I was over the first of many hurdles. It is

in the very act of asking a question that you will be- gin a dialogue which can set

you free, the goal of all lib- eral education.

And so, in the days and weeks ahead, please feel at home on this campus, and, as you did at an earlier age, ask all those questions that fill your mind. We are here to give guidance and to create a process that will enable you to find the answers. But do not ex- pect all questions to disap- pear in the next four years. When you graduate, there

ought to be new questions on your mind, but UPEI will have succeeded if, when you leave us, you have that confidence and the knowl- edge to find your own an- swers.

To each and every one of you, my personal good wishes that your stay here will both be rewarding and happy. Enjoy yourselves!
